Happy Fall Everyone!

Hope you’re enjoying all the fun fall activities—pumpkin picking, hayrides, apple picking, hiking, and a few local festivals! 🍂 Leave those cell phones in the car and take the opportunity to have meaningful conversations and check-ins. Showing interest in what’s happening at school and at home helps strengthen your connection. Even if you have a very shy Little, they’ll open up over time.

Hopefully, your Little is keeping up with their school assignments. If they’re struggling, ask what kind of support they need—your guidance can make a big difference. I always ask my Little, “How can we turn a C into a B, or a B into an A?” She usually knows what’s required: pay more attention in class, study a bit more, ask for help when she doesn’t understand something, or avoid procrastinating on projects. We talk through a plan and celebrate together when those improved grades start coming in!

Reminder: October 10th is World Mental Health Day! It’s a great time to raise awareness and check in on your Little’s mental health. If you have any concerns, please reach out to your Match Support Specialist so we can provide guidance and referrals as needed. We also offer mental health training sessions that are incredibly helpful.

Enjoy the fall, and hopefully we’ll see you out on the hiking trails! 🍁

BIG OF THE MONTH:

BIG SISTER AMY & LITTLE SISTER CHLOE

Why do you enjoy the Big Brothers Big Sisters program?

I enjoy the program because it provides a Little with a one-to-one mentoring relationship that they may not have the opportunity to experience elsewhere. Providing guidance and support to a young person is a privilege!

What has been the most memorable moment in your match?

Being matched with Chloe has been wonderful. We both love art, music and like to help others. We've experienced small moments of connection, but I think one of the best moments was watching Chloe during her school soccer game and being able to cheer her on! I was also able to meet her mother and brother. It was an opportunity to learn even more about Chloe. It was fun, and I think Chloe liked it!

Why does your match work so well?

Chloe is a deep thinker that is empathetic towards others, and has a level of discernment that is evident in everything she does. It's been a pleasure being matched with her. I try my best to provide her with guidance and support when needed. When I initially met Chloe, she was very shy. It's been lovely to see her come out of her shell!

AGAPE ACRES HORSE FARM!

Our Bigs and Littles visited Agape Acres Horse Farm, where they got to feed chickens, pet and brush horses and a bunny, walk ponies, paint horseshoes, and more. They especially loved Copper, one of the big male horses. The Littles asked the staff lots of questions about the animals and were very engaged throughout the visit. One Little even asked the owner if she could volunteer regularly because she connected so well with all the animals!

CHEFS IN THE MAKING!

Another successful cooking class with Catering by Cordre!

On Friday, our matches attended a professional cooking class sponsored by Catering by Cordre and Dilworth Church. Together, they made baked ziti & meatballs while learning new kitchen skills and teamwork in the process.
