Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Claudia Sharpe!
|
Claudia Sharpe has been volunteering with Kitsap Humane Society for the last 2.5 years and has become a familiar face to all! She has contributed over 530 hours of her time, along with her passion and excitement for our animals in several different departments! From dog walking, to helping out our Vet Services team, Claudia eagerly jumps into any position she can to help contribute to the mission of KHS!
Claudia first joined KHS after leaving her job, wanting to find something that made her happier, “I remembered my friend and her daughter volunteered previously at KHS with the cats and loved it. So, I thought ‘well I love dogs’ and have been here ever since!”
Claudia is one of our Advanced Handler dog walkers and some of the moments she treasures most involve helping new dogs settle in, “Every time I’m told or read a certain dog is shy or scared and I have the opportunity to patiently sit or kneel in that dog's kennel as they loosen up and come to me and allow me to leash up and walk with them always becomes a standout moment”. Claudia even spends extra time with these dogs, providing them with enrichment and working to figure out what they need to feel more secure in their new surroundings.
|
|
When asked what she loves most about her time here, Claudia said “I love, love, love, meeting all the new doggies! Also, I seriously cannot go to bed at night until I see the “who’s been adopted” post on our volunteer site!”
Her passion for seeing new dogs find their forever home comes from the love she has of her own 9-year-old Boston/Rat Terrier, a spunky “B/RAT” that keeps Claudia always on her toes.
Claudia truly brings contagious positive energy to each day she spends at KHS, making it a brighter place for all the animals, volunteers, and staff. Thank you for all the laughs, smiles, and support you bring to our Volunteer Team, Claudia!

Staff Spotlight
Meet Mel Fenswick!
|
Put your paws together for this month’s staff spotlight, Mel Fenswick! Serving as our Director of Finance and Human Resource, Mel has been a part of our leadership team since 2018! Managing our shelter’s budget, accounting and finances as well as our hiring and human resources is no small feat, but Mel does it with positivity and a small but mighty team!
Her supervisor shares, “Mel is a great partner to me at KHS and we work together on all sorts of projects – finance and human resources of course, but really on all things KHS. She is an excellent sounding board and is very invested in the success of KHS and all of our staff. She takes time out of every day to check in not only with her team, but staff throughout the organization.
“Plus, Mel is my coffee buddy, and if either of us are needing an afternoon pick me up, we just shout across the hallway “You going on a drive this afternoon?” Mel embodies the KHS mission and vision, and it’s a pleasure to work with her.”
|
|
Mel’s favorite part? “I love my job, not just because we have one of the best missions ever, but because I get to combine my love for numbers, people, and animals all into one! We can’t further our mission without better supporting our number one asset, our STAFF!”
You got that right, Mel! Thank you for being a valuable addition to our team!
