Trouble in Mind

The play tackles the harsh truths of racism of the 50s and 60s in American theatre. Set during rehearsals for a Broadway show, the story centers on Wiletta Mayer, an African American actress who has long been cast in stereotypical roles. As rehearsals progress, Wiletta’s fight for dignity clashes with the realities of the industry’s racial biases, threatening her career.  More>>

Memnon

STAFF PICK!

Through September 28 at the Getty Villa Museum

Don’t miss the final weeks of Getty’s annual outdoor theater production featuring Memnon! In this epic tale from Greek mythology, a powerful Ethiopian king journeys to Troy to engage in battle during the city's darkest hour. It’s a story that has been overlooked for over a millennium … until now. KCRW called it a truly unforgettable experience and gave this advice: “Do yourself a favor, book a night to spend outdoors in a Malibu canyon with an ancient myth. You won’t regret it.” More>>

Completeness

Completeness is a brilliant brilliant play. The actors whizz through this gorgeous funny and painfully real dialogue with lighting speed but also with phenomenal care. You don’t miss a syllable. Which is important because there are an awful lot of words… But what could feel terse and affected is actually gentle and heartfelt.

Standing By

These two actors are really wonderfully cast. They are lovely, normal, people. Sweet, attractive, funny, clever and totally engaging. Standing By is a hugely entertaining play. But it takes really excellent actors to lift it off the page and make it real. Ellen and Jeffrey are such brilliant characters. Full of virtue and vice, vulnerable, interesting and compelling. Bravo to these fine actors for packing them full of life and making them real. Review>>

The (Mostly) True Story of a Common Scold

Every single actor in this wonderful, funny and insightful play is excellent. They are all truly gifted, working together to fill this story up with character, poignancy and the kind of subtle reference to our crazy political climate that leaves us shaking our heads and ready to fight as hard Anne Royall fought, and to the bitter end. Review>>

Crevasse

It’s not an exaggeration when I tell you that Crevasse is one of the finest plays I have seen. It is absolutely extraordinary in fact, and Leo Marks and Ann Nobel are phenomenal. How is it possible for a person to so totally dissolve into a character that when they become another in front of your very eyes they seem to be two completely separate entities? They are both utterly mesmerizing in all their roles. Review>>

The Skin of Our Teeth

The Skin of Our Teeth is playing until the end of the month, if we all make it that far, and I urge you to go and experience what may well be the one and only time you will see this astonishing play. It is a masterpiece of satire and magical realism and it takes real genius to even attempt to stage it…aren’t we lucky to have this wonderful innovative company in our midst. Review>>
