Just who was St. Francis and why are there dogs in the pews on St. Francis Day?

Have you ever looked with awe at an amazing creature, like a bird swooping through the sky or a salamander climbing up the steps in front of you, a beautiful flower blooming in the garden, or even a cat sleeping in the sun? Then you know how St. Francis felt. In the early days of the 13th century, Francis recognized that we all are part of the natural world.

He was an "instrument of peace," just as the prayer attributed to him describes, to peace with people, peace with animals, and peace with the natural world. Brother Sun and Sister Moon, Brother Wind and Mother Earth are just the beginning of his respect and reverence for the world that began with the voice of God.

On Sunday we bring our beloved pets, including our stuffed animals, to church and ask for God’s blessings on them, all of us, and all of creation in recognition of the interdependence of the earth.  And if this year's celebration is anything like the ones from years past, all our beloved creatures will experience that blessing.
