Growing out of a small-town school event in California,
Women’s History Month
is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. The United States has observed it annually throughout the month of March since 1987. Click here for more on
Women's History Month.
Many who have survived trauma find it difficult to celebrate their accomplishments. It is a fact that the brain tends to hold onto negative experiences more readily than it does to the positive events. It's said that the brain's
"negative bias"
is designed to keep us out of harm's way. This is certainly true for those we serve at PurchasedLV.
PurchasedLV participants are reminded of their strengths, of the positive changes they've made, and of their responsibility to continue to work toward their healing. Every volunteer, community partner, family member and staff, play an essential part in helping our ladies achieve wholeness. Thanks for helping make history together!
“It isn't where you come from; it's where you're going that counts."

It has been a crazy, busy, amazing month at Purchased! One of our biggest reasons to celebrate is
the launch of our new program, Reclaimed
!
During our Reclaimed Launch on February 21st we were able to hear from Cassie Hammett, the founder of Purchased in Shreveport, LA, Cheryl Cooley from the Department of Family Services, Michelle Blakeley from Lake Mead Wellness Center, and Carly Souza
from Fostering Hope! We had over 60 of you attend to learn about this new program. If you are interested in possibly becoming one of these foster families, make sure to reach out!
Also…
It’s our juvenile program’s FIRST BIRTHDAY!
Our first gal to ever join the juvenile recovery program is nearing her high school graduation. We are BEYOND proud of her and would love to take credit, but the truth is, we can’t because all we did was hand her the tools she needed—she took those tools and worked so hard to get to where she is today.
I know I say this every time, but I can’t help it: I’m so thankful for all of our dedicated volunteers who’ve chosen to use their gifts and talents in Purchased! Thank you for all your love and support over the past year, and for those of you who pitched in at the Reclaimed Launch.

Reclaimed: Trauma + Trafficking
Trained Foster Families
|
|
Reclaimed is a new program in partnership with the Department of Family Services and Fostering Hope
to train foster families about trauma and trafficking so that they can become a safe, loving home to a teen girl who's been trafficked. That teen will then receive wrap-around services in the Purchased Juvenile Recovery Program, and the foster family will receive support as well! It's a holistic approach to keep everyone healthy and cared for.
Studies show that kids do better in
families
than they do in group homes or institutions. This is why we want to plug these kiddos into a loving home that is equipped to care for them and their trauma alongside Purchased LV.
If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Reclaimed Foster Family, please email our director, Kat, at
[email protected].

Can you believe March has already arrived? This is a powerful month friends – it is Women’s History Month! The theme “Let’s Make History” resonates with many of us as we reflect upon the women who have gone before us – Maya Angelou, Anne Frank, Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth and others who share their feminine ferocity.
I consider Malala Yousafzai, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, for her strength as she survived a gunman’s attack because she advocated for the education of young girls in Pakistan. These women inspire us and demonstrate the way to fight for a more equitable world for the Purchased: Not for Sale young ladies. Each staff member, volunteer and supporter of this organization is a warrior in their own right. We co-labor on behalf of our program participants as they heal from trauma and lay hold of a brighter future.
February was an amazing month with the launch of Reclaimed. As our tents were in the church courtyard several weekends, we witnessed the blessing of a woman, currently living in sexual exploitation, seek help and restoration. Multiple families have shown interest in fostering our Purchased: Not for Sale ladies and even more signed up to participate in the Fostering Hope through Care Communities. God is certainly on the move!
Cherise and I are excited to announce the next ongoing volunteer training is coming up in four weeks! There will be two opportunities to attend: Monday, March 30
th
from 6-8 pm or Saturday, April 4
th
from 2:30-4:30 pm. Please choose the date that works best for you and RSVP to the invites sent to your inboxes! We will host this event in our Purchased program space and we look forward to seeing you there!
Thank you all so much for your endless support! Please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns at
[email protected].

Here is a little about what you could do as a volunteer:
Purchased volunteers help to fill many program needs.
Program Assistants
can find themselves monitoring the girls during their online schooling or helping them with homework.
Recovery Class Leaders
prepare and instruct materials that enhance the participant's spiritual and emotional health. Because PurchasedLV participants live across the valley, we rely on our
Transportation Volunteers
to help get the girls to and from the program space. The
Outreach Team
routinely prays with and provides supplies and support to trafficking victims throughout Las Vegas! Our
Events Team
assists at all of our community events and trainings, and the
Prayer Team
keeps our program alive through prayer.
Thank you!

Volunteer Spotlight! - Sonya Corthell
|
|
|
For March, we would like to shine the spotlight on our volunteer, Sonya Corthell!
Sonya has volunteered with Purchased since the beginning. She engages with the young ladies in the program as a program assistant and joins them on field trips as well.
|
|
|
|
Here's a little more about Sonya:
"I was raised in a small town in northern Nevada and
have lived in the Boulder City area for six years. I am a single mom of a toddler!
A scripture that I live by would be 2 Corinthians 5:17. It reminds us that every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.
An impact I hope my time at Purchased has had on the participants is love. I want them to feel genuinely loved and cared for, like part of a family.
I am so appreciative of this program and all the time I have been able to spend with the girls and other believers who share my passion. I can't wait to see what God has in store for the next year!"
Thank you, Sonya!
