Pure Water and AleSmith Partnership

Pure Water San Diego is thrilled to share more about our partnership with premier San Diego craft brewery, AleSmith Brewing Company. Brewed with advanced purified water from the Pure Water Demonstration Facility, Re:Beer is a crisp dry-hopped lager and the culmination of months of collaboration. The excellent water quality of our advanced purified water provides AleSmith with a unique and bold brewing opportunity to create a local lager that isn’t usually possible with San Diego’s current water supply. We are excited to partner with a local business with a shared emphasis on sustainability and commitment to the future of water in San Diego!

Construction Highlights

Miramar and Scripps Ranch

In the last several months, extensive progress has been made on the construction of the Dechlorination Facility located on Meanley Drive in Scripps Ranch. The Dechlorination Facility will remove residual chlorine levels from the purified water pipeline, which is necessary for transmission and disinfection prior to Miramar Reservoir delivery. Recent progress includes the facility masonry structure, roof, floor slab, equipment pads complete, with ongoing interior mechanical buildout progressing. In addition, more than seven miles of pipeline have been installed as of Fall 2025, completing the connection from Scripps Ranch area to the Miramar Road corridor, via Carroll Canyon Road, and Businesspark Avenue under Interstate 15 tunnel crossing. Work is ongoing in Scripps Ranch and on Eastgate Mall.

University City

In University City for the Morena Pipelines Northern Alignment and Tunnels project, the Pure Water construction crews made considerable progress on pipeline installation and tunnel construction! Over 7 miles of pipeline have been installed, and over half a mile of tunnel is complete. Crews continue to work on pipeline installation at the intersection of Nobel Drive and Genesee Avenue Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. through 6:30 p.m. Last month, crews pushed through to the other side of the I-805 tunnel. As one of the longest and deepest tunnels across Pure Water Phase 1, this marks a huge milestone for the project!

At Genesee Avenue and SR-52, crews have finished installing the open cut-casing and pushed pipe through the casing. The backfilling of the trench is complete, except for the pipeline testing point. Crews are currently working on the curb and gutter replacement.

Progress continues at the North City Pure Water Facility and Pump Station, the cornerstone of the suite of Pure Water projects. As of September 2025, this project is over 85% complete! Crews continue to work on installing treatment equipment and water quality lab materials inside the facility. Work continues to progress on the interior of the administration building, and other construction activities include mechanical and electrical work at the pump station as well as paving outside of the facilities.

Clairemont, Bay Park and Morena

Progress on the Morena Pump Station continues. Crews worked on the upper levels of the pump station by continuing construction of the electrical building, maintenance building, and the perimeter walls, as well continuing progress on the various structures that will form the future pump station.

More than 11 miles of pipeline have been installed as part of the Morena Conveyance South and Middle and Bike Lanes project. Crews are currently working at the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Genesee Avenue, installing pipeline during nighttime hours from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Additional pipeline installation is also underway along West Morena Boulevard.

Recently, crews completed curb-to-curb paving and applied new roadway striping on Clairemont Drive. Paving operations along Clairemont Drive are expected to resume in early 2026, progressing north through the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Genesee Avenue. Looking ahead, crews are preparing for the pipeline tie-in at Genesee Avenue and Appleton Street, which will connect the Morena Conveyance Middle pipeline with the Northern alignment.

Community and Industry Events

The Pure Water team has been hard at work attending community events and hosting industry tours! In July, we attended the University City Community Association’s 4th of July event and had a great time providing Phase 1 progress updates to the community! We also hosted industry tours of the North City Pure Water Facility during the California Association of Sanitation Agencies 2025 Annual Conference and the WateReuse California Conference. Between facility tours, presentations and events, our team enjoyed sharing solutions for a sustainable water future!
