Standards Based Learning

Standards-Based Learning is a continuous learning cycle that centers on mastering core academic skills and giving students the opportunity to take ownership of their academic development. Standards-Based learning doesn’t get rid of assessments or grades — what it does is change how we measure success. By focusing on specific core skills with clear goals, students are able to self-assess, navigate setbacks and chart a path forward. Our goal is to empower students to grow in their learning by tackling harder problems and complex tasks without fear of failure on the first try.

East Celebrates Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month

This month, East High School has celebrated Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month as students and staff honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. Through vibrant hallway displays, mariachi performances from San Jose State University, and of course, the flag presentation of all Latin American Countries on East Washington Avenue, our school community celebrates diversity and heritage. It is a powerful time for Purgolders to unite, learn from one another, and elevate the Latino/Hispanic voices and traditions that enrich East High every day.

East Celebrates Banned Books Week

East celebrated Banned Books Week with our local librarian + the Wisconsin Book Festival. Jen Milne-Carroll (East LMTS) and Kristen Delorme (Memorial LMTS) held a conversation with author Jarret Dapier on Wake Now in the Fire: A Story of Censorship, Action, Love, and Hope. Wake Now in the Fire is a fictionalized account of a true event that galvanized a community, based on extensive interviews with the real-life students and teachers who were affected, and written by the librarian who exposed key information about the Chicago Public Schools censorship decision. This graphic novel is an inspiring portrayal of student activism taking on one of the most urgent issues of our time, and a passionate reminder of why protecting the books we love matters.
