East High School's Tower TV - Episode 1!
Check out our first 2020-2021 Tower TV Episode! Tower TV is a production of the East High School Advanced Video Production class. The Mission of Tower TV is to unite our viewers by finding and producing entertaining and informative stories relating to the East High community, while mastering the craft of film/ video production (now without editing software, fun times!). This week's episode includes a Zoom comedy sketch, sports update, virtual learning feature (with Mr. H-S & Ms. Kim), pet of the month, and announcements.
Free Weekly Meal Boxes and Pop-Up Food Pantry
During Virtual Learning, MMSD Food & Nutrition is offering once per week pickup of Market Box meals at 40 school sites. The response to changing to once per week pickup vs. the daily breakfast/lunch meal pickup offered in the spring has been very positive.

The pick up date and time for East High School is Mondays, 10:00-11:45am, but any student/family can go to any of the 40 sites.

MMSD added an additional pickup site with evening hours for families who are unable to attend during the workday. Tuesdays, from 4-6pm, families can pick up a meal box at the MMSD Food Production Center, 4711 Pflaum Rd.

Additionally, East High School hosts a Mobile Pop-Up Food Pantry in the big parking lot by the Field House on Thursdays from 3:30-5:00pm. Each household gets approximately 25 lbs of shelf-stable food, 10-20 lbs of dairy/produce, a gallon of milk, and 10 lbs of frozen meat in prepared boxes/bags. Please contact our social worker, Ms. Lennertz, with any questions.
Free Opportunity for Students With Disabilities
The Self-Determination Conference on October 27th-28th is a free opportunity for high school and transition aged students, college students, adults with disabilities, family members, educators and professionals. Learn from self-advocates and get the latest information about employment, health solutions, housing options, financial opportunities, and so much more! Register and find more information on the Board for People with Developmental Disabilities website or contact Molly Cooney. Register by October 10th to ensure there is time to get your conference kit. Final registration closes October 23rd.
October ACT and PSAT/NMSQT Update
Normally, East would be offering the ACT and PSAT/NMSQT exam in October. Regrettably, due to current conditions and safety concerns, MMSD will not sponsor the exams that are scheduled for East through the end of October. We will keep you updated about the next upcoming ACT exam dates.  The College Board is offering the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT exam on January 26, 2021. We plan to participate on that date if we are able. Information will be provided as it becomes available, likely in November.Thank you for your understanding and patience. If you have any questions, please contact Assistant Principal Mikki Smith.
Technology Updates
Zoom has released a Chrome extension that will fix some of the performance issues you might be seeing on your Chromebook. To install it, please hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds, and then turn your Chromebook back on. The new Zoom extension should install automatically.

If you have Chromebooks, hotspots, or library books that you are not using, we ask that you return them so that others can use them. You may drop them off at one of the HUB locations (at Memorial or LaFollette HS)--no ticket or call needed. If the weather is bad, the workers and library drop boxes will move inside, but they will still come out to help you. Families can call or text the HUB number posted outside and tell them that they have items to drop off.
Yearbook Portraits Needed For ALL Students
Due to online registration and students not being able to get a new Lifetouch portrait in time for publication, the Tower Tales yearbook will be collecting portraits from ALL STUDENTS.

Students in all grades should use this "SUBMIT 2021 EAST HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK PORTRAITS" Google Form to submit a photo.

9th grade photos are due Friday, October 2nd!
October Youth Business Mentoring Program
Common Wealth Development is going to be offering another completely virtual round of their Youth Business Mentoring Program. Topics include personal branding, personality exploration and how that relates to work, career exploration, job applications, financial literacy, and much more. To be considered a complete application, I need both a Youth Application and a Parent Application filled out and submitted to me by Friday, October 9th, 2020 at 5:00 PM. We will be capping this training at 20 students so submit applications as soon as possible so I can reserve spots!

Applications are due by 5:00 PM on Friday, October 9th, 2020 to ashley.h@cwd.org.

Students will complete a virtual intake prior to training starting during the week of October 12th - 16th. Training begins via Zoom on Monday, October 19th, 2020 and will go through Friday, October 30th, 2020 from 4:00-5:00 PM each afternoon. Upon program completion, each student will be paired with a mentor who will meet with them to discuss their goals for working and what they’d like to pursue for employment. CWD will serve as a reference for students and assist them in getting hired at a part-time job, and then work with them to ensure it’s a successful placement.
