Homecoming Week - October 26th-30th
Since we can't have in person Homecoming festivities during 1st semester Virtual Learning, Student Congress has come up with some other ideas to virtually celebrate the season during the week of October 26th. Homecoming week will include a pumpkin carving/decorating contest, costume contest, and Spirit Days. Seniors, keep your eye on your email for a link to vote for Homecoming Court!
Voting Information
Student activism is alive and well at East High School! East's Human Rights Club and Human Rights Week presents "The 2020 Election on November 3: The Most Critical Election of Our Time and Why You Need to Vote" seminar led by Mr. Adams this Monday, October 26th, from 9:30-10:30am via Zoom. You can also view simple instructions for making sure your vote gets counted in the elections on November 3rd by going to east.mmsd.org/vote and finding links to Wisconsin voting registration information and watching student videos with instructions.
Updated Quarter 2 Calendar
The MMSD School Year Calendar has been updated for quarter 2 to reflect our all virtual schedule. You can view the updated calendar in English, Spanish and Hmong at mmsd.org/calendar. A reminder that we will have Parent Teacher Conferences on November 17th in the evening and on November 18th all day. There will be no school on November 18th.
Wednesday Attendance Changes
The district heard from families that the way attendance has been taken on Wednesdays has been more challenging than expected for both students and staff. As a part of the adjustments the district is making based on what they've learned, we will be shifting away from taking attendance for every course on Wednesdays, and instead we will take attendance based on communication with virtual mentors beginning October 28th.

Our core attendance principles will still apply:
  • Attendance will be taken every school day
  • Students will have until midnight to engage each school day
  • Wednesdays are asynchronous instructional days

Each Wednesday morning Virtual Mentors (listed in period 10 of the student's schedule) will share a simple Google Form with their students via email or Google Classroom. It will essentially ask students 1) if they are attending that Wednesday, 2) what mode of communication will be most likely to promote a successful connection during the coming week, and 3) what they are working on and supports that may be needed. Students will need to answer the questions and submit the form.
The virtual mentor will look at the form responses Wednesday afternoon and mark absent any student who didn't yet respond. Phone calls will go out Wednesday evening to any absent students, reminding them they can still submit the form before midnight. Attendance will be updated Thursday.
Winter Sports Update
Please read the latest statement from MMSD and from the Big 8 Conference regarding the status of Winter Sports. MMSD will not be offering winter sport in-person coaching during the virtual school model. We will continue to provide opportunities in whatever means are available based on our schooling model and public health guidance as well as WIAA guidance for winter sports . General fitness, strength, mental health, academic, and social emotional connection supports will be offered by the athletic department throughout the year to all students.
Spoken Word & Poetry Workshop Series
MSCR is partnering with the UW-Madison JVN Project to offer the One Life spoken word/poetry workshop series. Workshops will meet on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:30pm starting on October 28th. Sign up to receive more information including the Zoom links. Contact Mayder Lor, East's MSCR Recreation Specialist, with questions.
