Machatzis HaShekel:
Before Purim, it is customary to give zecher l’Machatzis HaShekel, commemorating the half-shekel given annually in the times of the Beis HaMikdash. The minhag is to give three half-dollar coins (or their equivalent) to tzedakah, commonly on Tannis Esther or before the Megillah reading. This is given on behalf of adult men, with many having the custom to include women and children as well. Taanis Esther/Megillah:
The fast should preferably be broken only after hearing Megillah reading on Monday evening. However, if you will not hear Megillah until later in the evening, eating light snacks after nightfall (at 6:58pm) would be permissible. A full meal should not be eaten until after one hears the Megillah.
Mishloach Manos:
The mitzvah is accomplished by sending two ready-made food items (or one food and one beverage) to one friend. Both foods may have the same bracha. Even if you are participating in the Shul Mishloach Manos, you should personally deliver a package to at least one person.
Matanos L’evyonim:
The Mitvzah is fulfilled by giving tzedakah to two poor people on the day of Purim - please see letter below from Rabbi Gibber.
Purim Seudah:
The Purim seudah is a mitzvah to be celebrated during the day of Purim. It should include a bread meal, with meat and wine, and be conducted in a spirit of simcha shel mitzvah. One should drink a bit more wine than usual to enhance joy, while maintaining proper conduct and respect for mitzvos. If the meal extends into the evening, it is valid as long as it began during the day, and Al Hanissim should be added in Birkas Hamazon.
