Pushback from local public school supporters helped ditch a Gulen-related charter school from opening in a rural Alabama district

A charter school proposal by a Texas-based, charter operator associated with the Fethullah Gulen political/religious movement has been shut down before it opened in rural Alabama. Trisha Powell Crain provides the details.

The Fethullah Gulen Movement adherents have established nearly 200 charter schools in the nation. Many of these schools and their management companies have been investigated by state/federal officials for irregular education practices and suspect financial dealings.

The folks in Washington County Alabama were skeptical of an out-of-state corporate charter operator taking money out of their public school system to provide some kind of school operation that is not needed.

There are a lot of corporate charter operators in Ohio that have thrust themselves on districts.
