This week we're presenting 6 Bridges Gallery, Flinn Gallery and Salem Art Association.
This week's three exhibitions push the boundaries of art-making in creative and experimental directions. These shows find beauty in the mixture of two liquids, in the art and science of capturing light, and in complete immersion "shattering" perceptions of what a gallery can be.

Fluid Fantasies at 6 Bridges Gallery
in Maynard, Massachusetts, through February 22

6 Bridges Gallery presents Fluid Fantasies, a show featuring Ernest Stonebraker's playful use of liquid to create abstract scenes suspended in water. Coming off of a previous show, Aquarious Abstracts, where Stonebraker dropped food coloring into water, the artist is now experimenting with different liquids - karo syrup, mineral oil and more - as well as new methods of mixing liquids together. The result, printed on aluminum, are dreamy and surreal multi-colored works that echo the look of light shining through delicate glass work. The show's opening reception will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 6 Bridges Gallery is located at 77 Main Street, Maynard, MA. Flinn Gallery presents Camera-less, a show featuring photographic works made by artists Joanne Dugan, Amanda Marchand, Anne Arden McDonald and Liz Nielsen - without using a camera. Rather, the artists experiment with "light, chemicals, objects and time on photo-sensitive paper" to achieve their final product, according to a curatorial statement. From monochromatic works that repeat captivating patterns to abstract captures of light on paper, the four artists push boundaries to show what is possible in the photographic world. The opening reception is Thursday, Jan. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. The gallery is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Flinn Gallery is located at the Greenwich Library, 101 West Putnam Avenue, Second Floor, Greenwich, CT. Curated by artist Tadhg Slater in collaboration with Salem Art Association, this show features a diverse roster of established and emerging artists "exploring themes of brokenness, identity, memory, transformation, and perception" through an immersive experience that takes full advantage of the gallery space. The gallery notes that to preserve the immersive nature of Shattered, there will be no gift shop in January. The gallery is open Friday to Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. Salem Art Association is located at 159 derby Street, Salem, MA. For more information, please visit here. | |
