Puster Elementary Principal Message
October 25, 2018
Puster Parents,

I think we had the largest crowd Monday evening that I can remember at our Fall Family Fun Night. The weather was perfect and the sugar was abundant. Rhiannon Evans, who puts together our yearbook, is asking that you send her any pictures that were taken Monday evening so she can include them in this year's yearbook. The email is  Pusteryb@gmail.com .

I want to make sure I say "Thank you!" to Panera Bread in Allen. They donated 250 cookies for our cookie walk at Fall Family Fun Night. If you get a chance to drop by, make sure you to let Josh Oberlin know how much we appreciate Panera's support.

As a reminder, tomorrow is a student holiday. Our teachers will be on campus participating in professional development. These days are very important as we want to continue work toward deliver the best school experience we can for your children.

I hope you have a great weekend and have a chance to attend the LHS Homecoming football game.

Pride in Puster,
Kevin

Watch D.O.G.S. 2.0 "Another Year, Another 100"
Take a day or ½ day to be a hero for your child. Get your picture on the Puster Watch D.O.G.S. wall with your child.

Signup below for your day. Let’s see how fast we can fill this up.

What is WATCH D.O.G.S. and how do you participate?

Watch D.O.G.S. is a program that helps bring dads and other male role models into our school. Dad's spend a day with their child at school and get to interact alongside the teachers, help with carpool, monitor hallways, help out in the classroom, help with specials...the possibilities are endless.
Have you completed the districts background check?

Lovejoy ISD Volunteer process for the 2018-2019 school year is not yet open. Should be soon.
Each Watch D.O.G. dad is encouraged to wear a Watch D.O.G.S. T-shirt on the day he is volunteering at the school. Your child/children may also want a "My Hero" shirt to wear that day too. Below is the link to purchase your t-shirts. Watch D.O.G. t-shirts are not required but it's encouraged.

BIG Appreciations...
I f you have been at Puster in the past few days or watched our Facebook posts, you have seen some outstanding hallway decorations created in preparation for our author event. The Puster library always has incredibly supportive volunteers who go above and beyond to create special experiences for our kids. Kim Feehan, Allison Vermie, Florissa Boublis, and Hannah Mordecai pulled together some fabulous wall art-- a train car, a notebook of doom, quirky lunch menu, Pinata Rex, meat-eating vegetables, and a giant bubble wrap mummy! Some of our kids used their time in Kids First to create a balloon goon, and kids in book clubs and makerspace contributed more creativity with spiders, monsters, and more. Mr. Cummings will be so impressed with the colorful welcome! Thank you so much for all of your hard work.

Stuart Lloyd took also took an idea and ran with it. Mrs. Peabody and Mrs. Smithwick reached out with a library theme-- Be Here, Be You, Belong-- and wished for some art to communicate the message. Mr. Lloyd jumped in and created a gorgeous banner with many popular book characters that is proudly displayed outside the Wonder Space so that we can see it from the library. Thank you for the special gift! We know our kids feel honored.

Save Your Boxtops
Welcome back to school! Don't forget to save those box tops when you are back to school shopping. There is a new box top collection container in the school lobby that you can drop your box tops in. You can bring them with you to meet the teacher or when school starts again, just remember to put your teachers name on the bag or envelope so your class will get the credit for them for the fall contest. You can turn in all of your box tops in this container. You do not need to take them to your classroom any more (just don't forget to write your class on it). In November we get to see which grade brings in the most box tops and which class gets the box top trophy for bringing in the most!! Thank you for always keeping an eye out for box tops to earn money for our school.

Tutoring 101
Lovejoy ISD is pleased to welcome Tutoring 101 to the Circle of Partners . Tutoring 101 and Lovejoy ISD have formed a revenue generating/sharing partnership to bring their services to Lovejoy families. Please see below for several offerings.

Private tutoring is available for students in grades K-12 in all subjects. Tutoring 101 recommends once a week tutoring for an hour to increase grades and learn subject matter more deeply. A once a week appointment usually results in an increase of one letter grade or more. Turn those C's into B's.

What is your SAT/ACT score? Want a better one? What do you need it to be?
Invest in a PSAT/SAT/ACT Prep program not just a class. Tutoring 101 helps high scorers get top scores, average students raise their scores and poor test takers achieve the scores colleges want. Tutoring 101 students have earned admissions and scholarships, and have saved thousands of tuition dollars every year.
  • Specialize in working with individual students and their specific needs

Lovejoy Letter Campaign
A Message from the Lovejoy Letter Liaison

Dear Campus Families:

We need your help to let our teachers and staff know how much our Lovejoy ISD community values them and the impact they have on our children! Teachers’ salaries include a 1 ½% payment (annual compensation) on the Friday before Thanksgiving break. In addition to the payment the staff receives, we would like to include a handwritten letter from Lovejoy families expressing gratitude and appreciation to each teacher and staff member on our campuses.

We would be so grateful if you would write a letter or letter(s) to any teacher(s) or staff member(s), either current or past, who have played a valuable role in your child(ren)’s educational experience. Please clearly label the envelope with the teacher’s/staff name and LLC (Lovejoy Letter Campaign) and return it to the front office of the applicable school by Friday, November 9.

The letter campaign has become a meaningful Lovejoy tradition. We appreciate the time and effort your contributions will make to this year’s letter campaign. Remember #shortandsweet #showappreciation.

Sincerely,
Lovejoy Letter Liaison
Drug Awareness Parent Presentation
Thursday, October 25
Our Unexpected Journey – Helping Parents Be Prepared

Susan Hoemke will be sharing her son Hayden's story and their dark journey through his downward spiral into drug use, addiction and legal issues. Their seemingly perfect family life came to an abrupt end when they found themselves uneducated about – and unprepared for – managing these issues. They lost their sweet, beloved son Hayden in 2014 just before his 23rd birthday. The Hoemke's experience was tragic, and one they wish no parent would have to experience. Sadly, many will and are today.

Mrs. Hoemke will bring some light to this darkness by sharing her experience in hopes of providing some information about how drug abuse can start, what to watch for, and tools to handle these situations, if they do occur. All parents in the district are invited to attend the presentation at Willow Springs Middle School in the Band Hall on Thursday, October 25 at 9:00 AM. You may click here for additional information.
