Puster Elementary Principal Message
May 10, 2019
Puster Families,

Monday and Tuesday our 3rd and 4th graders will be participating in the state STAAR Math and Reading assessments. To maintain test security, we ask for no volunteers or visitors on these days. We all know that “a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast” are ideal on test days. Beyond that, an energy of “relaxed and confident” is equally as important! We all need to take a deep breath and let our kids know they are going to rock it next week!

We are very excited to tell you that the Parker Family will continue to serve the Puster kids! Mr. Parker’s wife, Carla, and their son Joe will be joining us next year. Carla has been teaching 2nd and 3rd grades at Lovejoy Elementary. She will be filling our open 3rd grade section. We are very thankful to gain her experience on our staff!

The form for student class placement requests will close on Thursday, May 16th. Please take a moment this weekend to complete the form if you would like us to note your preferences: https://forms.gle/q1D3d7Xs2RsW9c5LA .

Thank you so much for all of the kindness and words of support you have given me this week. I hope you and your families have a restful Mother’s Day weekend. The Haynes crew will be working on some overdue house and landscaping projects and, hopefully, catching some Lovejoy baseball!

Pride in Puster,
Holly

Because of the generosity of the Lovejoy community, the Foundation is awarding $403,593 in classroom grants to the Lovejoy teachers and staff for the 2019 - 2020 school year. Forty-four grants were awarded last Friday at Puster, Hart, Lovejoy, Sloan Creek, and Willow Springs. Each and every one of you, our Lovejoy Community, who supported the Foundation this year, are the reason this is possible. The Foundation directors would like to congratulate and say thank you for making 2018 - 2019 a successful year.

Important News from Student Nutrition Regarding Student Meal Accounts
This is a courtesy message from Lovejoy Student Nutrition Services to inform households of an upcoming change in student meal accounts. In an effort to minimize negative balances at the end of the school year, beginning Wednesday, May 8 and for the remainder of the school year, students will no longer be able to charge meals which will result in the student incurring a negative balance to their meal account. Students may continue to use their lunch accounts as long as they have money in the account. Households with students who currently have negative balances will receive reminder emails and phone calls. Federal regulations prohibit us from rolling over negative balances to the next school year. Please make arrangements to remit payment for any negative lunch accounts your child may have incurred.

All positive balances will be rolled over to next school year. If you have a graduating senior, funds may be transferred to any sibling in the school district. To request a meal account refund, please complete a refund request form located on the Student Nutrition website. For assistance, please contact Student Nutrition at 469.742.8041.

Student Nutrition Services thanks you for your understanding and for allowing us to serve your student(s) this school year.

Puster Elementary
Library Lowdown
Important Dates in the Library
May 10-- Last day to check out books
May 13-- Notices of all books checked out
May 17-- All library books due
Week of May 20-- BOGO Book Fair

The end of the year is rapidly approaching, and we have many big projects happening in the library. We will soon conduct a full inventory of our library collection. We will stop circulation on Friday, May 10 for students, and on the next Monday, we will send notices to families of all books on student library accounts that will be due Friday, May 17. After May 17, we will send frequent reminders about overdue books. Please help us by either returning the books or contacting us to let us know if the books are lost or damaged. Many times, when we mark a book LOST in our system, it is resolved in the last couple of weeks of school. We never want our students to have a bad experience in the library, so any news of lost or damaged books is always received with something like, "That's a bummer! Thanks for letting us know so we can update it in the computer." When our collection is up to date in the library system, we are able to help students more efficiently, and we can make informed decisions about what purchases need to be made to fill gaps.

The Scholastic Buy One Get One Free Book Fair will be here the week of May 20. Mark your calendars and make that list of chores for your kids to earn some spending money. :)

Thank you for your continuous support of our Puster Library!

Educational Game Donation
In keeping with our #PusterKind initiative, we have another opportunity to make an impact at Burks Elementary (the same McKinney Title 1 Elementary school for which we did the Angel tree at Christmas). They need educational games for their classrooms and we believe that our community can make a difference for them by supplying them with this need. Please bring in any complete games that you no longer need or new games that you feel led to purchase. There will be a collection bin in the atrium to collect all your donations. We truly appreciate your kindness.

Lovejoy Offers Group Counseling

Lovejoy is offering group counseling for students for a variety of areas. The groups will meet weekly, during school hours, and will be facilitated by Lovejoy’s Social Worker, Noelle Gove, LCSW. The overall goal of the counseling groups is to address student’s social/emotional needs that may be impacting their experience and success at school. Groups are being offered, based on need, to every campus in the district, grades K-12.

If you are interested in your student participating in a group, please  click here to complete the interest form. Noelle Gove will be in contact with parents regarding further details of the group and to obtain consent for student participation. This form is not a consent for counseling, but rather a survey of interest.

Tutoring 101
Lovejoy ISD is pleased to welcome Tutoring 101 to the  Circle of Partners. Tutoring 101 and Lovejoy ISD have formed a revenue generating/sharing partnership to bring their services to Lovejoy families. Please see below for several offerings.

Private tutoring is available for students in grades K-12 in all subjects. Tutoring 101 recommends once a week tutoring for an hour to increase grades and learn subject matter more deeply. A once a week appointment usually results in an increase of one letter grade or more. Turn those C's into B's.

What is your SAT/ACT score? Want a better one? What do you need it to be?
Invest in a PSAT/SAT/ACT Prep program not just a class. Tutoring 101 helps high scorers get top scores, average students raise their scores and poor test takers achieve the scores colleges want. Tutoring 101 students have earned admissions and scholarships, and have saved thousands of tuition dollars every year.
  • Specialize in working with individual students and their specific needs
  • Day-of-test strategies
  • One-on-one/small groups
  • PSAT/SAT Classes: Tues or Thurs or Saturdays
  • ACT Prep Classes: Mon/Wed or Sat
