Puster Elementary Principal Message
May 16, 2019
Puster Families,

As you are by now well aware, Lovejoy ISD is facing a potential funding shortfall of ~3 million dollars pending the outcome of HB3 later this month. The direct impact at Puster Elementary is the elimination of the K-2 GT pull-out program. Instead, K-2 students who qualify for GT services, will continue to be served within the general education classroom.

If you are concerned about the impact of this current legislation on our school and district, I strongly encourage you to reach out to our representatives. Dr. Womack has provided all of us with various modes of communication as well as “words” to use in our tweets, facebook posts, phone calls and emails.

Today is the last day to make requests for student placements next year. Please follow the link below if you would like us to make note of your preferences.

Finally, it is time to order school supplies. Please note, this year headphones are required but must be purchased separately. We have included a suggested set as we know this type to be very durable.

I hope you and your families have a restful weekend!

Below is the link to a google form where you can list characteristics in a teacher that you believe would make a good fit for your child and his/her learning style.

I have instructed our classroom teachers to make  classroom balance  their first priority when creating class lists. Having a diverse group of learners and a healthy mix of personalities creates the best environment for teaching and learning. Teachers will also be looking closely at the characteristics in a teacher you describe in the form.

SchoolPhones headphones were developed by a dad whose son continually destroyed headphones. They have excellent recording and audio quality and are protected under a one year warranty.

NEW! Medications at School
If your child has medicine at school, please make sure your child has exactly enough medicine to finish the school year. You are responsible for picking up any extra medicine as the school district has a policy against sending medicines home with students. At the end of this school year, any remaining medicines, including inhalers, will be thrown out. The school cannot store these for you during the summer. Some of these medications may not have been picked up after a field trip.

Please remember, if your child is going to continue being medicated at school during the 2018-2019 school year, you will need to complete a new medication sheet at that time and bring a SMALL or travel size bottle of medicine that is not expired.

FIELD DAY – Friday, May 24
This year has flown by! May is quickly approaching which means it's time for Field Day again. Field Day is the largest event of the year and our kids look forward to it all year long. Field Day will take place on Friday, May 24th. We need as many volunteers as possible to make this event a success. This is a really fun day to volunteer. You will get to see your kiddos in their element with all their friends and lots of smiles and giggles. If possible, please check out the sign up link below to help on this exciting day. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers. All you have to do is provide your time! Questions, please contact Jill LaTorre at  jilllatorre@gmail.com  or (214) 662-5089

Important News from Student Nutrition Regarding Student Meal Accounts
All accounts need to have a balance to be purchase a lunch.
This is a courtesy message from Lovejoy Student Nutrition Services to inform households of an upcoming change in student meal accounts. In an effort to minimize negative balances at the end of the school year, beginning Wednesday, May 8 and for the remainder of the school year, students will no longer be able to charge meals which will result in the student incurring a negative balance to their meal account. Students may continue to use their lunch accounts as long as they have money in the account. Households with students who currently have negative balances will receive reminder emails and phone calls. Federal regulations prohibit us from rolling over negative balances to the next school year. Please make arrangements to remit payment for any negative lunch accounts your child may have incurred.
All positive balances will be rolled over to next school year. If you have a graduating senior, funds may be transferred to any sibling in the school district. To request a meal account refund, please complete a refund request form located on the Student Nutrition website. For assistance, please contact Student Nutrition at 469.742.8041.
Student Nutrition Services thanks you for your understanding and for allowing us to serve your student(s) this school year.

Puster Elementary
Library Lowdown
All Library Books due Friday, May 18
We are working hard in the library to conduct a complete inventory of our collection. All student library books are due this week. Please help your student remember to check backpacks, cars, under beds, and anywhere else library books may hide. Teachers are working diligently to help the kids check desks, book boxes, lockers, and classroom libraries for missing books. The first class that has all library books returned (or cleared accounts) will earn Lights Out in the Library. This is an extended time to relax and read in the dark library with flashlights and headlamps.

If your student has a book on his/her account that you cannot locate, simply email  alison_smithwick@lovejoyisd.net  or  emily_peabody@lovejoyisd.net  and we will make the correction on the account so that you stop receiving notices. Fines for damaged or lost books can be paid on RevTrak under Puster Library. Thank you for your help in clearing your child's library account.

BOGO Book Fair, May 21-23
This book fair is short and sweet! We will be open next Tuesday and Wednesday 7:30-3:30 and Thursday 7:30-Noon. The Buy One Get One Free fair is a great time to stock up on summer reading materials at great prices. This is also a good time to help teachers stock their classroom libraries. Our campus loves book fairs, and we always are overwhelmed with the incredible support our parent community provides. We are excited to kick off summer reading with fun new books!

Leopard Leaders and Morning Crew
As you know, the last weeks of school are intensely busy. Leopard Leaders and Morning Crew responsibilities will be coming to an end by Thursday, May 23. Thank you for supporting your kiddo with these leadership roles!

No more Makerspace supplies needed this year!
Makerspace will be closing soon, and we do not have a good way to store cardboard and other recyclables for the summer. We appreciate the numerous donations you have made, but we will no longer need any until next fall. :)

Educational Game Donation
In keeping with our #PusterKind initiative, we have another opportunity to make an impact at Burks Elementary (the same McKinney Title 1 Elementary school for which we did the Angel tree at Christmas). They need educational games for their classrooms and we believe that our community can make a difference for them by supplying them with this need. Please bring in any complete games that you no longer need or new games that you feel led to purchase. There will be a collection bin in the atrium to collect all your donations. We truly appreciate your kindness.

Lovejoy Offers Group Counseling

Lovejoy is offering group counseling for students for a variety of areas. The groups will meet weekly, during school hours, and will be facilitated by Lovejoy’s Social Worker, Noelle Gove, LCSW. The overall goal of the counseling groups is to address student’s social/emotional needs that may be impacting their experience and success at school. Groups are being offered, based on need, to every campus in the district, grades K-12.

If you are interested in your student participating in a group, please  click here to complete the interest form. Noelle Gove will be in contact with parents regarding further details of the group and to obtain consent for student participation. This form is not a consent for counseling, but rather a survey of interest.

Tutoring 101
Lovejoy ISD is pleased to welcome Tutoring 101 to the  Circle of Partners. Tutoring 101 and Lovejoy ISD have formed a revenue generating/sharing partnership to bring their services to Lovejoy families. Please see below for several offerings.

Private tutoring is available for students in grades K-12 in all subjects. Tutoring 101 recommends once a week tutoring for an hour to increase grades and learn subject matter more deeply. A once a week appointment usually results in an increase of one letter grade or more. Turn those C's into B's.

What is your SAT/ACT score? Want a better one? What do you need it to be?
Invest in a PSAT/SAT/ACT Prep program not just a class. Tutoring 101 helps high scorers get top scores, average students raise their scores and poor test takers achieve the scores colleges want. Tutoring 101 students have earned admissions and scholarships, and have saved thousands of tuition dollars every year.
  • Specialize in working with individual students and their specific needs
  • Day-of-test strategies
  • One-on-one/small groups
  • PSAT/SAT Classes: Tues or Thurs or Saturdays
