MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

June 12, 2023

Businesses are ever evolving and the workforce skills they need seem always in flux too. However, with Baby Boomer generation retirements clipping along at 10,000 per day, this is opening several jobs that relied upon skill sets that have not evolved all that much over the years.

“If you’re looking for a career that doesn't require a college degree, pays six figures and offers strong job security, you might want to brush up on your typing skills.”

In a CNBC story released this morning, court reporters, “often referred to as guardians of the record, play a critical role in the U.S. legal system, producing accurate, impartial transcripts of legal proceedings.” The story goes on to say that the profession is short about 5,000 reporters.

Now before you get too excited, “to become certified nationally, a court reporter must be able to pass a state-approved exam and demonstrate that they can type at least 225 words per minute as two voices speak.” 225 words per minute?! Is that even possible?! I top out at about 50 words per minute and cannot even imagine what 225 even sounds like. Thank goodness the State Chamber didn’t make me take a typing test!

News You Can Use

There are a number of key economic indicators out this week, and we start off tomorrow with the May Consumer Price Index results. Also released tomorrow is a year-over-year snapshot of CPI. Wednesday afternoon we’ll learn of the Fed’s decision on interest rates, followed by an afternoon press conference led by Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Producer numbers are released earlier that day too. Thursday brings us U.S. retail sales, import price index numbers, industrial production figures for May, and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing survey. We wrap up on Friday with consumer sentiment figures.

This is a very light week for companies with earnings calls. We kick off today headlined by Oracle, and Wednesday with homebuilder Lennar. “CRRA Research analyst Ana Garcia says the industry has shown resilience thanks to a low supply of existing homes, with tight inventory offsetting pressure from higher home prices, elevated interest rates and depleted consumer confidence.” Adobe and Kroger round out the week of calls on Thursday.
