I Am an Artist:

Physical Wellness

Your body is the instrument behind every rehearsal, performance, and creative session, yet care for it is often the first thing to go when life gets full. This assessment invites you to look honestly at how you tend to your physical wellness and how that shows up in your work. Do you know what your body needs to create at its best? Does that care hold steady when things get hectic? Is it a practice you could share with other artists? Take a moment to notice where you are and what might help you feel more fully energized in your art.

EMILY CAVENDER

Ominous Outlooks

Denton, TX

Tell us about yourself.

My current creative focus is blending textiles, fashion, and metal work in order to highlight the experience of living with invisible disabilities. My goal with this work is to reclaim identity through fashion, which has always been such a major part of my life. When viewers look at my work, I want them to see beauty in the visceral. I want them to see the unfortunate truths of what it can feel like to have to endure long term pain or illness, especially when others don’t understand because they can’t see it. This body of work is a love letter to myself and to others who share my story as well. Using fashion has been the perfect way to express this. Historically, disabled people have been denied access to fashion- adaptive clothing is either nonexistent or much more expensive. We are out here everyday creating the change we want to by refusing to give up that part of our lives.

I thrive when I...

Create the change that is yet to exist.

What is helping you move toward thriving in your creative life right now?

Finding other disabled creators who understand how to make their own practice more accessible.
