Driven by Purpose: Meet the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of Pleasantville High School’s Class of 2025

Pleasantville High School proudly announces the Class of 2025’s Valedictorian, Camilla Zabikhodjaeva (left), and Salutatorian, Katie Wildey (right). Both students exemplify the district’s mission to develop compassionate, contributing citizens — each bringing her own drive, passion, and perspective to her achievements.

Camilla Zabikhodjaeva – Valedictorian

Camilla joined the Pleasantville community in second grade, and from a young age, she knew she wanted to make an impact beyond the boundaries of her hometown.

“I think I always knew I wanted to go out and change the world,” she said. “I knew the best way to do that was to be in good standing and try my best.”

Outside the classroom, Camilla has developed her voice through the Congressional Debate event in Speech and Debate, where she’s built friendships beyond Pleasantville and deepened her understanding of policy and global affairs. She also began practicing tae kwon do in eighth grade and is now a black belt—an outlet she values for helping her stay active and grounded.

One of her favorite subjects is French, which she’s studied all four years with Madame Deborah Hurdis, advisor of the French National Honor Society. “Her class discussions pushed us to speak about complex issues in French,” Camilla said. “It allowed us to freely express our opinions while appreciating cultural perspectives.”

Camilla plans to attend Oxford University in England to study international law and arbitration. “My parents’ immigrant background is a foundational part of who I am,” she said. “I want to work in international law, help bridge cultures, and give back. Especially now, when our world feels so divisive.”

Madame Hurdis praised Camilla’s character and intellect:

“Camilla is, without question, the most academically driven student I’ve had in my career—but beyond her intellect, she’s curious, kind, passionate, and a natural leader. It’s been a true pleasure having her in class and seeing her grow over the past four years.”

Camilla also credits science teacher Joanne Pugliese, affectionately known as "J Pug," as a key mentor. “She’s fun, smart, and supportive in a way that’s real. She’s a tough-love kind of teacher who genuinely cares.”

Pugliese reflected on her experience teaching both Camilla and Katie:

“As their chemistry teacher, I had the joy of teaching both Camilla, our valedictorian, and Katie, our salutatorian. Through hard work, brilliance, and optimism, they balance equations—and life—with strength and elegance. They’re rare elements, and truly unforgettable.”

Katie Wildey – Salutatorian

A Pleasantville student since kindergarten, Katie’s academic path has been fueled by a lifelong love of learning and a strong sense of balance.

“I always loved reading,” she said. “I worked hard because I wanted to, and I kept going because I didn’t want to let that go. I stay motivated because I understand the importance of balancing the things I enjoy outside of school with my academic commitments.”

An athlete since age five, Katie plays soccer, lacrosse, and track for Pleasantville. “Being on a team is such a great escape,” she said. She’s also active in student government and yearbook, and has taken on the role of event photographer, capturing the heart of school life through her camera lens.

One of Katie’s favorite subjects is Spanish, taught by Señora Blanco, with whom she’s built a strong bond over the years. “She’s not just a great teacher—she’s someone I could talk to during tough times,” Katie said.

Blanco offered her own heartfelt tribute:

“Katie was a beautiful rosebud when I had her as a freshman, and now, after four years, that bud has blossomed into a stunning rose. Your brilliance, kind heart, and beautiful spirit will make everyone you meet on your new journey love you just as I do! Los caminos de la vida te llevarán a lograr todos tus sueños. ¡Olé, olé! ¡Enhorabuena, Katie!”

Though Katie only had Joanne Pugliese for one class, she continues to seek her guidance. “I still stop by her room every week—she’s helping me with my college decision,” Katie said. She recently decided on the University of Virginia.

Katie plans to pursue public policy or international relations, with a long-term goal of working for a nonprofit or intergovernmental organization like the United Nations. A passionate advocate for service, she’s also committed to joining the Peace Corps after college—something she’s envisioned since seventh grade.

“There’s a lot in the world we’d like to change,” she said. “Our education gave us the foundation to do that—and we want to use it.”

Camilla and Katie’s journeys reflect not only academic excellence but also a deep commitment to purpose, perspective, and service. As they take their next steps, they carry with them the values of the Pleasantville community—and a vision for building a more connected, compassionate world.
