Thank You For Attending Funding Forward 2023!

Thank you to all who joined us in Chicago and online for Funding Forward 2023! It was a joy and honor to connect, learn, and strategize alongside you.

As we look back on the conference, we are thankful for countless moments of connection with colleagues, friends, and co-conspirators committed to building a queer and trans future where we can all be free! Much gratitude due to our conference planning committee, our sponsors, and to the presenters who spoke across our four plenaries and twenty concurrent sessions.

If you attended Funding Forward and would like to provide feedback on your experience, the conference survey is live in Whova now through January 8th.

Applications Open for 2024-2025 GUTC Fellowship

There are more than 1 million “out” trans people living all across the United States. Yet less than 4 cents of every $100 awarded by U.S. foundations focuses on trans communities. Our Grantmakers United for Trans Communities (GUTC) program is a critical intervention to this funding reality, and we’re excited to be accepting applications for our next cohort of GUTC Leaders Fellows!

The GUTC Leaders Fellowship provides ongoing support, peer networking, and leadership and professional development to a cohort of 6 trans, gender non-conforming, or non-binary professionals in philanthropy over a 12-month fellowship period, beginning in the spring of each year.

Applications due: January 15, 2024. Apply today!

Members, We Want To Hear From You!

At Funders for LGBTQ Issues, we deeply value the support of our network. And as our network continues to grow (with more than 100 institutional members for the first time in our organization's history this year!), we want to make sure our offerings better serve the needs of the philanthropic sector. We need your insights and feedback to make that happen!

We’re excited to invite you to participate in our 2023 Membership Survey, where you can share your thoughts and help us shape the future of membership with Funders for LGBTQ Issues! Whether you’re a Program Officer or an Operations Associate, we welcome folks with different perspectives and roles.

Fill out the survey now – it’ll take less than 10 minutes, we promise! If you are unsure of your membership status, please check this list of institutional members on our website

The Funders for LGBTQ Issues office will be closed from December 18, 2022, through January 1, 2023, to practice self-care and wellness for our team. We are excited to connect with everyone in the new year and wish you a joyful and restful holiday season.

Article: Black Trans-Led Orgs Don’t Require Intermediaries

With less than 4 cents of every $100 awarded by U.S. foundations going to trans communities across the board, Black trans-led organizations face a specific and unique challenge. In this article published in Forbes, Borealis’ Fund for Trans Generations Director Dominique Morgan points out how funneling funding for trans issues through non-trans decision-makers dilutes impact. Morgan goes on to make the case that philanthropy should be funding trans leaders and issues directly. Read the full article.

Course: Philanthropology™, Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy

How did present-day philanthropy come to be? And how might a greater understanding of the history of our sector help us leverage philanthropy to drive social change? These are all questions that are the focus of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy’s new Philanthropology curriculum. The 9 hour, synchronous virtual course provides philanthropic professionals with an in-depth critical study of philanthropy through a social justice lens. Participants learn the landscape and history of the philanthropic sector and dig into concepts like intersectionality, movement building, grantmaking with an equity lens, and strategies for putting this knowledge into practice.
