Record-Breaking Grant for Transgender Issues
History was made earlier this summer when it was announced that the Tawani Foundation had awarded a $1.35 million multi-year grant to the Palm Center for their newly launched Transgender Military Initiative. This grant is the largest transgender-focused grant that we know of, single-handedly increasing overall foundation funding of transgender issues by 20 percent over prior years. The grant became all the more historic last week when Tawani Foundation president and founder, Col. Pritzker came out as transgender. ... Click here to read more.

What's next for the LGBT Southern Funding Project?
Something special happened in Charlotte, North Carolina at the end of July. The first summit of the LGBT Southern Funding Project not only attracted over 50 funders, representing 39 organizations, from 11 different states and the District of Columbia (8 of those states being Southern States), but it also built some real momentum for strategically increasing funding for LGBTQ communities in the U.S. South. ... click here to continue reading.

A new report from the Funders for LGBTQ Issues, authored by president Ben Francisco Maulbeck, looks at the movement of LGBTQ funding over time and how LGBTQ grantmaking has interacted with other trends in the philanthropic world and beyond. This new report also offers recommendations for increasing LGBTQ funding in the future.

Crain's Chicago Business featured an interview with Funders for LGBTQ Issues President Ben Francisco Maulbeck and Funders for LGBTQ Issues Director of Communications and Education Lyle Matthew Kan on the topic of corporate funders withdrawing support from the Boy Scouts of America as a result of their anti-LGBTQ policies.

- Gay Community Endowment Fund
Grant proposals for funding from the Gay Community Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation should be submitted online by 5pm on Friday, September 13.
- Native Voices Rising
Native Voices Rising, a project of the Common Counsel Foundation and Native Americans in Philanthropy, is accepting letters of inquiry from Native Groups seeking grants.
- Delaware Valley Legacy Fund The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund is accepting applications for its 2013 LGBTQ Emerging Needs Grants through August 30th.
- The Pipeline Project
The Pipeline Project has opened applications for the 21st Century Fellows Program.
- New York State Health Foundation
In the wake of new changes brought on by healthcare reform, the New York State Health Foundation is looking to fund outreach and/or enrollment programs targeting certain populations, including the LGBTQ community.
Recent Grant Award Announcements
- The Colin Higgins Foundation
The Colin Higgins Foundation announced three new recipients of their Youth Courage Award. All three young people are openly LGBT and undocumented. They will each receive $10,000.
- New York State Department of Labor
The New York Department of Labor has awarded $1 million over 18 months to the Ali Forney Center, Hetrick Martin Institute and the NYC LGBT Community Center to provide job training and placement services to LGBT youth with prior involvement in the criminal justice system. This grant was advocated for by the Empire State Pride Agenda and the Campaign for Youth Shelter.
- U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration
The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration has awarded $556,000 over three years to Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine to launch the nation's first LGBT-focused clinical psychology track.
- Richmond Memorial Heath Foundation
Richmond Memorial Health Foundation has awarded $97,600 over two years to ROSMY (Richmond Organization for Sexual Minority Youth) for its suicide prevention program.
- The Kevin J. Mossier Foundation
The Kevin J. Mossier Foundation has awarded $198,000 to University of Minnesota Collage of Liberal Arts to provide scholarships for students, regardless of sexual orientation, to take unpaid internships at organizations and small businesses across the state.
- San Diego Human Dignity Foundation
The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation has approved a second-year grant of $25,000 to the San Diego LGBT Community Center for its Senior Services.
