This June marks 50 years since the first Pride Marches took place to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969. Intentionally labeled as marches, not parades, these marches sought liberation. Today, 50 years after the first official marches and 51 years after Stonewall, we are still seeking liberation. We are still resisting police violence. And we are still fighting to make sure Black Trans Lives Matter.

- At the outset of this month, Funders for LGBTQ Issues partnered with Hispanics in Philanthropy to produce a new infographic, Philanthropy OUTlook: LGBTQ Latinx Communities, and co-sponsor a workshop at the 2020 HIP Virtual Leadership Summit entitled “Funding Essential Work: New Data on Philanthropic Support for LGBTQ Latinx Groups.”
- Our team also partnered with AAPIP on their virtual convening. Lyle Matthew Kan, Vice President of Research and Communications, participated as a panelist at The State of AAPI Philanthropy – A Conversation About Anti-Black Racism. If you missed it, click here to watch the webinar recording.
- We also were proud to more than a dozen funders and philanthropy-serving organizations in co-sponsoring the “Defend Black Lives: A National Funder Organizing Call”, hosted by Funders for Justice/Neighborhood Funders Group. Our Out in the South Initiative also collaborated with organizers around the early June webinar, “Call to Action: Southern Power, Southern Impact, Southern Funding," calling for $10 million in new resources for work led by and for LGBTQ people, people of color, and women in the region.

BLACK LIVES MATTER
IMMIGRANT RIGHTS
- This month, we also celebrated the Supreme Court ruling that the Trump administration could not proceed with its attempt to dismantle Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). In our statement, Luis Rey Ramirez, Research & Communications Associate, shared, “Eight years ago, DACA changed my life. Though [this decision] was a major win, we must not lose sight of the struggles of our Black and Brown family. We must not forget that the system is still broken, we must not forget the original DREAMers–our parents–are still living under the shadows.”
- In an Op-Ed in the Orlando Sentinel, Funders for LGBTQ Issues member and Out in the South grantee Marco Antonio Quiroga of the Contigo Fund articulates the power of the DACA victory for himself and other DACA recipients--and the need to continue the larger struggle for liberation.
NON-DISCRIMINATION PROTECTIONS
- This month also saw the Supreme Court rule in a landmark 6-3 decision to affirm federal workplace protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. As we note in our statement, “In the midst of racist violence and transphobic attacks, including Trump’s cruel and likely unconstitutional rollback of healthcare protections for transgender people that was finalized last Friday, we find reasons to be hopeful.”
- As Movement Advancement Project noted in their statement, before the ruling “only 22 states and D.C. had laws that explicitly prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity....Now, 100% of LGBTQ people in the United States, regardless of whether they live in states with nondiscrimination laws, are protected from employment discrimination under federal law.”
- MAP also noted that studies “suggests that nearly 50% of LGBTQ workers remain closeted at work and fear being stereotyped or jeopardizing professional connections” and that “27% of transgender workers reported being fired, not hired, or denied promotion in the past year.” Our own research in The Philanthropic Closet: LGBTQ People in Philanthropy, found that the majority of LGBTQ people in philanthropy are in the closet at work - meaning there is much to do in making philanthropy more LGBTQ-inclusive.
- Work remains to secure full nondiscrimination protections, particularly in housing and public accommodations. As articulated by many LGBTQ movement organizations, including Freedom for All Americans and TLDEF, LGBTQ people still lack protection from discrimination in many walks of life, from restaurants to adoption agencies.
