North Carolina brewery-to-pet-food-factory conversion providing hands-on training for new millwrights
The launch of a $450-million project to turn a brewery in North Carolina into a pet-food factory lined up perfectly with the opening of a union training center in that state, providing hands-on learning for newly recruited SSMRC millwrights and a skilled labor force for contractors working at the site.
“One of the key points to take away is how this project has helped us start building a membership base around the new training center in Charlotte,” said Logan Brown, director of the SSMRC’s Eastern Region. “This project has helped us kick off our North Carolina membership drive with employment opportunities.”
The first millwrights from the Southern States Millwright Regional Council arrived at the jobsite on Nov. 1, 2021, and the project is slated for completion this month. SSMRC millwrights have worked for three contractors at the site: Griffin Industrial Contracting; Superior Rigging & Erecting Company; and PSC Crane & Rigging. Read more.

Let's take advantage of historic union interest to recruit needed workers
Interest in unions is up, and union membership is rising. That's good news for our industry partners because, thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and other recent federal legislation, there will be plenty of work for union contractors for years to come.
Increased union membership also means a more LEVEL PLAYING FIELD for ethical contractors. Let's work together to take advantage of this moment by recruiting dedicated people who are looking for union jobs – careers with great pay and benefits. Point them to our application.

Union contractors have advantage when bidding work at facilities funded by Chips and Science Act
Companies seeking funding through the CHIPS and Science Act, which is aimed at boosting American semiconductor research, development, and production, will be required to submit workforce development plans for workers who will build their facilities as well as operate them. Those plans must include strategies for meeting the Commerce and Labor Departments' Good Jobs Principles, which ensure projects create high-quality jobs. Applicants also are strongly encouraged to use project-labor agreements.
These guidelines give union contractors a strong advantage when bidding on work at facilities constructed with CHIPS funding. We are monitoring bidding opportunities and will keep you informed. Learn more.
