2nd Quarter 2026

Greetings!

Summer is heating up, and so is the impact happening across our community!

This quarter, we are excited to highlight the organizations, programs and people working to make Butler County stronger. Our largest grant cycle of the year recently awarded more than $750,000 to local nonprofits supporting a wide range of community needs and opportunities. From expanding access to essential services to creating meaningful experiences for children and families, these grants are already helping good work grow throughout the region.

In this issue, you will meet some of our recent grantees, celebrate local accomplishments and learn more about the partnerships and generosity moving our community forward.

More Than a Seat at the Table: Building a Stronger Nonprofit Board

A strong nonprofit board does more than attend meetings. Board members help provide oversight, guide strategy, support fundraising, build community relationships and serve as ambassadors for the organization’s mission. In our latest blog, we share key questions nonprofits can consider when evaluating whether their board is equipped to meet both today’s needs and tomorrow’s opportunities.

Nonprofit Spotlight – SELF

For 30 years, SELF (Supports to Encourage Low-income Families) has helped Butler County residents build stability and work toward self-sufficiency. As the county’s designated Community Action Agency, SELF provides free programs focused on employment, financial empowerment, home repairs and energy assistance.

SELF’s programs include:

  • Employment and Skill Development: JOBS NOW! and Getting Ahead
  • Financial Empowerment: Money Management, IDA Asset Building and Microenterprise
  • Home Repair and Improvement: Emergency Home Repair and Neighbors Who Care: Home Repair
  • Energy Assistance: Home Weatherization Assistance Program, Home Energy Assistance Program, Summer and Winter Crisis Programs, and the Percentage of Income Payment Plan

SELF also welcomes individuals and groups to volunteer with its Neighbors Who Care: Home Repair program. Volunteers of all skill levels can help make local homes safer and more accessible for homeowners in need.

Together, SELF and its community partners are helping build stronger families, neighborhoods and communities throughout Butler County.

Community Investment in Action with Tracy Eads

Tracy Eads is joined by Chris Corbitt of MidPointe Library System, HCF Board Chair Bob Long, and the one and only Dolly Parton at the Lane-Hooven House!

In March, MidPointe Library System received an HCF Unrestricted Grant to support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Butler County. The program provides children from birth to age five with a free, high-quality book delivered to their home each month, helping families build home libraries and strengthen early literacy skills before kindergarten. With automatic enrollment for Butler County newborns now underway and bilingual English-Spanish books available, this funding will help MidPointe sustain and expand the program so more local children can develop a love of reading and begin school ready to learn.
