This newsletter will share program updates, the technical assistance (TA) schedule of events, as well as a variety of resources focused on rural health services. Delta States
The Georgia Health Policy Center recently spoke to Loretta Wilson, CEO and founder of the Rural Alabama Prevention Center, about how building off each funded prevention effort can create healthier communities throughout the rural Delta region. 







Outreach
The Georgia Health Policy Center recently spoke to Karen McCraw, the vice president of advocacy and development; Melissa Bishop, vice president of nutrition services at Family Health Council; and Fatima Batool, public health program manager, at the Family Health Council of Central Pennsylvania about the implementation of an oral health screening program with the support of Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutritionists and community health workers.

A reminder from the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy on grant deliverable due dates. 

  • Performance Improvement Measurement System (PIMS) Report: September 30, 2023 
  • Final Closeout Report: November 30, 2023  
  • Final Sustainability Plan: November 30, 2023 
  • Final Evaluation Report: November 30, 2023 

All deliverables will be submitted in the Electronic Handbook (EHB). 

Remember: Your final closeout report due date will change if you apply for a no-cost extension (NCE). The new due date will be 90 days from the end of your NCE. Please verify due dates in EHB and reach out to your program coordinator if you have any questions.

Exit Interviews in August 
During our last TA call, we will take time to reflect back on this past year and talk about your experiences, progress, and feedback from the Rural Health Care Coordination grant. We are interested in hearing your thoughts on your successes, accomplishments, lessons learned, feedback on the tools and deliverables, and next steps for your consortium. The feedback you provide will help the Georgia Health Policy Center and FORHP strengthen our TA approach and program.

Exit Interviews in June and July 
Exit interviews will take place for some grantees in June and conclude in July. There is no need to prepare for the exit interview. They will occur during your scheduled monthly call date and time.

2023 Rural Community Health Connections Summit (Delta States Session) 
We look forward to seeing you in person on Friday, July 14 at 10 a.m.-12 p.m., during the Delta Session of the 2023 Rural Community Health Connections Summit. The 2020 Delta grantees will gather during this session to meet your new project coordinator, Diana Alatorre, review the remaining grant deliverables, and spend time reflecting on the past project period. Additionally, we will have dedicated time for networking with your peers.

  • Small Health Care Provider Quality Improvement Program Awards recipients are invited to attend the Rural Quality Program PIMS Reporting Technical Assistance Webinar. This session is intended for project directors and key project staff involved with project data collection, reporting, evaluation, and PIMS reporting.

PIMS Office Hours in August – Dates are coming soon! 
Sessions are hosted weekly to provide additional support to current Rural Quality Program grantees and answer questions related to the program’s annual PIMS reporting requirement. The hour-long calls operate on a first-come first-served basis. Any questions that are not covered during the call will be covered through individual follow-up after the call. The TA will be provided by the Rural Quality Program Team including FORHP program coordinator and project officer, as well as the Georgia Health Policy Center and Stratis Health Rural Quality Improvement Technical Assistance teams.

Strategies Program (RMOMS)
Site Visits 
The GHPC TA team offers site visits to grantees at no cost to your RMOMS network. These site visits offer a strategic opportunity for planning and capacity building with key program staff and partners. Previous examples of site visit topics have included:  
  • Aligning staff, leadership, and partners around a grant-funded initiative  
  • Strategic review of goals and objectives  
  • Using the Formative Assessment Tool to assess sustainability potential 
  • Using Power Mapping or other tools to engage stakeholders  
  • Collaborative Assessment-Network Scorecards to assess the health of your network 
  • Training or facilitation of partner conversations specific to program focus area and approaches 
 
Please talk with your TA provider about scheduling a strategic site visit before the end of September!  
 
New RMOMS Funding Opportunity 
The Federal Office of Rural Health Policy is pleased to announce that the RMOMS Program is now open on Grants.gov (announcement number: HRSA-23-049) and accepting applications through July 7, 2023. A total of $2 million is anticipated to fund up to two health networks in this cooperative agreement program. For more information, please visit the HRSA RMOMS website
 
2023 Rural Community Health Connections Summit (RMOMS Session) 
We are looking forward to seeing you in person on Friday, July 14 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. during the RMOMS session of the Rural Community Health Connections Summit. The 2019, 2021, and 2022 RMOMS cohorts will gather during this session to network with peers, discuss program successes and challenges, hear from a subject matter expert on a topic relevant for all, and learn about program specific announcements and updates. RESOURCES, NEWS AND OTHER UPDATES
The New Growth Innovation Network presents the Elevating Equity in Economic Development, An Inclusive Recovery Guide, which is “intended to inform regional economic development leaders across these three action areas … to support inclusive growth and address the inequities deepened throughout the pandemic.” The three action areas are organizational commitment and capacity, equity in economic development, and strategy and implementation. The Rural Public Health Workforce Training Grantee Directory provides an overview of the 2022 grantees. Each grantee has a profile and can be found by state, track, or organization type. You can access the directory here. 

The report by NORC at the University of Chicago and East Tennesse State University highlights disparities in diseases of despair between Appalachian and non-Appalachian regions in the United States using publicly available data. Click here to access the full report.  

America’s Health Rankings 2023 Senior Report, from the United Health Foundation, shares the health measures of older adults in the United States from recent years. The report shares information on early death rates, demographics, food insecurity, drug use, and housing measures. Access the full report here. 

The National Conference of State Legislatures created an interactive database regarding injury prevention legislation. Topics include prescription drug monitoring and abuse, pain management, child abuse and neglect, older adult falls, and teen dating violence. The database allows you to filter information by topic and state. You can access the database here.

The National Rural Health Association leadership conference is taking place July 11 to 12. The conference will allow rural health leaders to share their goals and experiences and to learn from one another. You can register here.

The Agricultural Community Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training takes place July 12, 2023, at 1 p.m. ST. It is hosted by the AgriSafe Network and aims to educate on the unique mental health challenges farmers face, how to implement QPR, and how to help someone at risk of suicide. Register here.
