QCRE Member Spotlight - Dr. Chitta Ranjan
In each issue of the QCRE newsletter, we feature one outstanding QCRE member who has
demonstrated excellence in the QCRE related fields, and the member can be from academia, industry or a student.
In this issue of QCRE newsletter, we feature our outstanding industry member, Dr. Chitta Ranjan, who is the Director of Science at ProcessMiner, Inc, with over 10 years experience in the field. He is author of the textbook, "Understanding Deep Learning: Application in Rare Event Prediction." He earned his Ph.D. in Statistics from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. Prior to this, he completed his bachelor's in Industrial Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, India. He specializes in developing real-time AI systems. He is recipient of best paper awards for his research. He also serves on multiple boards of directors in the analytics and engineering space, and previously worked at JDA, Pandora Media, and eBay. Dr. Ranjan is an active contributor to the AI community and an influencer. His publicly available content on YouTube, Towards Data Science, journal publications, and other open source contributions have over half a million readers. Globally, he has over 10k followers.

Here is Dr. Chitta Ranjan's Story with QCRE.

What is your current position and role?
I am the Director of Science at ProcessMiner Inc. I work on developing real-time predictive systems for autonomous optimization of continuous manufacturing processes.

What are your experiences with QCRE division at IISE?
I was involved in IISE events for many years now and joined the board of directors of the QCRE division in 2018. The experience over these past 3 years has been incredible. I get to work with an exceptionally dedicated team of top University professors and students. Together, we plan for conference sessions and events such as best paper competition, research poster competitions, and data challenges. Each of these events are designed to advance research, bring forward innovation, and help students and researchers progress in their careers. What I admired the most during this time is the sincere commitment of everybody to put in effort outside of their otherwise busy work schedules to plan and host various events. The division has consistently hosted beneficial events every year, which is all a result of the team's sincerity.

How have these experiences helped you in preparing yourself for your career?
My experiences with QCRE division at IISE has helped develop in some very measurable ways as well as inculcated some soft skills. One of the soft skills is the commitment and teamwork I developed to work on research activities to benefit the community. In some measurable ways, I closely work with some of the best professors. I learn from them and their work. The relationships built here resulted in my direct engagement with some advanced joint research projects. These engagements have been helping me stay up-to-date with the current research developments and innovate.

What are the achievements you are proudest of?
Recently, I published a textbook titled, "Understanding Deep Learning: Application in Rare Event Prediction." Deep Learning is an abstruse subject. Especially its theories. It is difficult to use them effectively or develop new concepts without a clear understanding. I am proud of my book because it provides a clearer and granular understanding of deep learning constructs. It is also taken by several US universities and abroad for graduate courses.

Any suggestions to future fellow students?
The team camaraderie we have is the best thing any such division would aspire. Let's nurture it and do even greater things!
