QR Codes or Quick Response Codes were invented in the 1990s but did not take hold until 2011. Back then, you had to download a special app then find it on your phone to scan the codes to get the info. So they fizzled out.
Then Android phones added the scanning technology to their camera, shortly followed by Apple. Now QR Codes are coming back strong. Just open your camera, point it at the funny shapes, and a link pops up to take you to several places:
