In The Success Commandments, Devon Franklin makes it clear that one can be successful in the secular world without losing his/ her faith. His life reflects this point. He was senior vice president of production for Columbia Pictures, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment when he stepped out on faith in order to pursue his dream of becoming a producer.
According to Franklin, Christians have chosen not to pursue their destiny because the church has convinced them they would lose their faith. As a result of their fear of being outside of God’s grace, many have never experienced the fullness of their lives and they missed out on the fullness of God.
Franklin defines success as a deep sense of peace. He believes that we find the most peace when we live out our true calling and fulfill the purpose which God created us. He further believes that if one makes the right choices, his/ her success in the secular world can strengthen his/ her faith. In effect, faith will not hold you back from being successful; it will empower your success. Moreover, he believes that God has never meant for His people to seal themselves in the church. “God wants us to ground ourselves in profound spirituality and faith and then venture boldly into our careers. “
In this book, Franklin includes one chapter for each of his ten commandments of success. One section of his book was particularly interesting to me. Franklin says, in effect, that if you believe that God has called you to do, do not take “No “as the final answer. He used examples of successful individuals who kept pressing after being told that they would never be successful. Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper job in Kansas City because an editor said that he lacked imagination and had no good ideas. Elvis Presley was fired by the manager of the Grand Ole Opry after one performance. Stephen King’s first book, Carrie received thirty rejections. Most of us only know about their success stories. Hopefully, these stories will inspire readers to believe in themselves.
To me, this book was very inspirational. Regardless of one’s age, there should always be goals that he/she desires to achieve. I believe that when one achieves one goal, he/she should immediately begin to work on another goal. Devon Franklin’s success commandments should serve as a guideline as one pursues his/her goals. Hopefully, what one wants for his / her life meets what God wants for him/her.
