Quaker Valley District News

At the School Board Meeting on Tuesday, May 23, the Board voted to approve the Design Development of our new Quaker Valley High School. This approval was required in order to allow the architects and design team to move forward in creating construction documents and prepare to take the project to the Leet Township Planning Commission.


The Design Development Presentation was shared at the Board meeting on May 17 and is available on our District website. In addition to the information and virtual tour offered in that video, please join us for a special message from Dr. Andreyko.

Quaker Valley Summer Music Camps

String-A-Palooza - July 17-21, 2023

The String-A-Palooza experience is designed for any Quaker Valley student who has successfully completed grade 4, 5 or 6 in our instrumental music program. Students will garner extended ensemble experience by playing along with students outside of their immediate grade level.


The cost for the camp is only $75!! Camp tuition includes a camp T-Shirt to be worn at the concert which will be held the last day of camp.

It is highly recommended that students attend this exciting music making event if they are in town during the camp dates!

2023 Quaker Valley Basketball Camp

Quaker Valley Boys basketball Coach Mike Mastroianni and his staff and players will once again host summer basketball camps at Quaker Valley senior high school gymnasium. Camp week is Monday through Thursday June 12-15. All basketball campers entering grades K-3rd in the fall of 2023 will attend the 9am-10:30am “Little Quakers Summer Camp” session and all other campers in grades 4th-9th will attend the 11am-2pm Basketball Day Camp session. 2023 Quaker Valley Cross Country Summer Camp

Students entering grades 3-9 in the fall are invited to the QV Cross Country summer camp run by QV Varsity Coach, Ryan Kelly and members of the QV coaching staff and team. The camp will occur Tuesday, June 6, 2023-Friday, June 9, 2023 (Tuesday, June 6, 2023, and Wednesday, June 7, 2023, in the afternoon from 3pm- 6pm while Thursday, June 8, 2023, and Friday, June 9, 2023, in the morning from 8am- 11am) at the QVMS track. The cost is $90 and includes a t-shirt (camp application must be received by Monday, May 15, 2023, to receive a t-shirt), simulated meets, running-based contests and games, detailed instruction with videos, teaching of fundamentals, guest speakers (Q.V. coaches and student athletes) and more! Click here to register. 

 

2023 Quaker Valley Track and Field Summer Camp

Students entering grades 3-9 in the fall are invited to the QV Cross Country summer camp run by QVMS Head Coach, Ryan Kelly and members of the QVHS and QVMS coaching staff and team. The camp will occur on Monday, June 19th, 2023, Wednesday, June 21, 2023, Thursday, June 22, 2023, and Friday, June 23, 2023, from 8-11 am each day at the QVHS stadium. The cost is $90 and includes a t-shirt (camp application must be received by Monday, May 15, 2023, to receive a t-shirt), simulated meets, track-based contests in the areas of throwing, jumping, sprinting, and distance running), detailed instruction with videos, teaching of fundamentals, guest speakers (Q.V. coaches and student athletes) and more! Click here to register. 


2023 Quaker Valley Girls Volleyball Summer Camp

Students entering grades 5-8 in the fall are invited to participate in the QV Girls Volleyball Summer Camp run by QV Varsity Coach, Mike Vavrek and members of the QV volleyball team. The camp will occur June 26th-29th, Monday-Thursday , 9am-12 noon each day at the QVHS gym. The cost is $100 including a t-shirt (camp application must be received by Monday, June 12, 2023, to receive a t-shirt). The camp will cover basic skills and fundamentals, passing, hitting, setting, and serving. Activities, games, prizes and more! Kids' Community Closet Summer Hours

The Kids' Community Closet will be open this summer on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are a "free-cycle" community space to share kids' clothing (birth through pre-teen). All clothing is free, and there are no applications, income requirements, or donations necessary to "shop".

Laughlin Children's Center Now Offering Early Language and Literacy Evaluations- Register now to screen your child!

An Early Language and Literacy Evaluation (ELLE) helps to identify children 5-7 years of age who are at risk for dyslexia and would benefit from early identification and treatment. The testing includes speech sound skills, receptive and expressive language skills, and pre-reading skills.


We can prevent or reduce reading struggles in later grades by providing early, evidence-based intervention at the pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st-grade levels.

Summer Reading at the Library

Looking for ways to keep your kiddos minds sharps and still learning through the summer months? Join the Summer Reading Program at the Sewickley Public Library! Fern Hollow Nature Center is gearing up for our 2023 summer camps and clubs. We are currently seeking teen volunteers to assist environmental educators this summer as camp counselors. Camp counselors help out with games, activities, crafts, and outdoor adventures. This is a great way to volunteer for community service and have fun while doing it! FOR AGES 8 TO 11

Camping, S’mores and More.  June 12 – 16 from 9:00 AM – Noon

Join us at Fern Hollow to learn about camping, s’mores, and more! Campers will learn to pitch a tent, cook the perfect s’more, and hike safely outdoors.


Mythology in Nature.  June 19 – 23 from 9:00 AM – Noon 

Campers will spend a week learning about Greek, Nordic, Egyptian, and several other types of mythology that are geared toward nature. We’ll discuss the Mighty Thor and learn about the weather. Another day we’ll talk about Artemis and train to become skilled archers. Glaucas was the Greek god of fishermen, so we will test our fishing skills out at King’s Lake. This session will be held at Fern Hollow Nature Center Monday to Thursday, and Friday at King’s Lake.


Nature Guides  June 19 – 23 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM

What kind of animals live around us? What’s the difference between a maple and an oak tree? Become an expert Ohio Township naturalist as we spend a week exploring the field, the forest, and the streams to learn more about the different plants, animals, and insects that call Western PA home.  This session will be held at the Ohio Township Community Center. 


Watershed Warriors. July 10 – 14 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM

Come explore the living world inside our creeks! At this camp, we will discover what kinds of plants and animals live inside the creeks of Western Pennsylvania. Come learn how the Allegheny river flows into the ocean and the different ecosystems that are created through salt and freshwater. Use kick-nets and dichotomous keys to discover the animals that live in the underwater world in our backyard creeks! We will explore watersheds by creating videos, exploring the creek hands-on, and building boats that will take our knowledge all the way to the Atlantic ocean!  This session will be held at Walker Park on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and at Fern Hollow on Tuesday and Thursday. 


FOR AGES 3-4  (must be bathroom independent)

Bear Cub Adventure. July 17 - 21 from 9:30 AM – Noon

Join us for a week of fun and discovery at Fern Hollow Nature Center!  Each day we will explore a different nature-themed topic, such as plants, animals and insects, through games, crafts and stories. Campers will also enjoy daily hikes, as well as free exploration and play time in our meadow and outdoor classroom.

Little Sewickley Creek Watershed Association - Day Camp

Summer Discovery is a day camp with an emphasis on nature. Campers will explore the creek and the woods, do creative activities, and play games. The camp, for students presently in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6, is accepting registrations for the week of June 19 or June 26. The camp runs from 8 AM till noon at Walker Park but on Friday we go to Kings Lake. The tuition is $40 for one camper, $60 for two campers or $75 for three campers in the same family. (If cost is an issue, scholarships are available). For registration info, visit our website www.lscwatershed.org or contact Chriss O’Lare at colare@outlook.com.

Sensory Art Camp (Ages 4-6) with Rachel Herman 

July 5th - July 7th 

This summer camp will combine art, play, and even a bit of mindfulness! Students will experiment with sensory materials like textured paint and clay. Sensory art is a great way to build motor skills, build nerve connections in the brain, encourage language development, and more. Each day will end with students bringing home an awesome new project! 

 

How Does My Garden Grow? (Ages 4-6) with Sally Oberdick 

June 12th- June 16th 

We will be little scientists and examine seeds, soil, and plants while learning about the germination process. You will read literature relating to flowers, fruits, and vegetables, and even do an insect study! You will also create hand-painted birdhouses and mosaic garden tiles to decorate your outside space.  

 

Childhood Culinary (Ages 7-10) with Jena Miller 

July 31st- August 4th 

This camp will teach young kids independence through cooking! You will learn basic knife skills, measuring skills, how to read a recipe and core healthy eating, as well as learning safety in the kitchen. 

 

Fairy Gardens! (Ages 7-10) with Alex Watrous  

July 24th- July 28th 

Do you believe in fairies? Join us in the ceramics studio to create your own fairy garden! Together we will hand-build the pottery base for your plants, along with whimsical accessories to fill your garden with magic and wonder such as: Ceramic cottages, bridges, toadstools, and more. Your finished product can be filled with plants for you to enjoy and will be a home that any fairy would love. 

 

Metals and Jewelry for Teens (Ages 11-14) with Meredith Bigatel 

Aug.14- Aug. 18 

Learn the basics of metalsmithing and jewelry in this one-week camp! Try your hand at the jeweler's saw, filing, and soldering with the acetylene torch to create beautiful, hand-crafted pieces of wearable art from start to finish. 

 

Crafting through Culture (Ages 11-14) with Joanna Conti 

July 24th- July 28th 

Travel the world creating a variety of artwork that embodies the history and culture from various civilizations around the globe. In this camp we will explore the meaning of the artwork created across these cultures while reimagining our own artwork based on the particular style. Each day we will explore a new place and theme, so join us as we explore Tibetan mandalas, African mask making, Navajo weaving, metal tooling from Mexico and Australian Aboriginal painting.
