Addressing Health Disparities in People Living With Dementia Webinar

In this web seminar, Andrea Garr will provide an overview of the United Family Caregivers project in Milwaukee, WI, and lessons learned from this project. She also will discuss best practices when working in cross-cultural environments with African American caregivers. Dr. Lisa Barnes’ portion of the presentation will focus on disparities in Alzheimer’s dementia and cognitive impairment as it relates to African Americans. She will discuss some of the most widely cited reasons for the disparities and describe findings on risk factors for cognitive decline from her cohort study, the Minority Aging Research Study. Purpose of the Online Nursing Home Training Sessions  
  • To provide nursing home leaders with a set of training materials that they can use to enhance understanding of important concepts and practices that promote effective communication, antibiotic stewardship, and C. difficile prevention; and to provide information, tools, and resources to take action to improve practices.
  • To provide an opportunity to apply for certificates of participation or a total of 11.3 nursing continuing education credits at no cost.
  • To develop and disseminate materials that can be accessed and used by long-term care (LTC) partners and stakeholders interested in these topics.

With use and overprescribing of antibiotics, there are certain bacterial infections that increase, including C. difficile . This session will discuss the strategies to prevent and track incidence and prevalence of CDI in nursing home s.
This session is one of a series of six sessions for nursing home s to support implementation of principles and practices of antibiotic stewardship and prevention and management of C. difficile infections.
