Schatz chosen as Eisenbarth Award recipient

Desmond Schatz, M.D., professor and interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and Pediatric Medical Director of the University of Florida Diabetes Institute, is the recipient of the prestigious 2021 JDRF George Eisenbarth Award for Type 1 Diabetes Prevention. The award will be presented Dec. 6 at the JDRF Mission Summit in Palm Beach, Florida.

The Eisenbarth Award is presented annually to a researcher for outstanding contributions to research toward the prevention of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Established in 2013, the award is named for the esteemed diabetes researcher George S. Eisenbarth, M.D., Ph.D., whose research provided the foundation for predicting T1D and identifying novel approaches toward its prevention and cure. As the leading global organization funding T1D research, JDRF is presenting the Eisenbarth Award to Dr. Schatz in recognition of his longstanding commitment to establishing and advancing large-scale collaborative research networks for predicting and preventing T1D. Walker named UF-site PI for Emory regional group

Ashby Walker, assistant professor in the UF College of Public Health and Health Professions’ department of health services research, management and policy and director of Health Equity Initiatives at the UF Diabetes Institute, joins Emory University’s NIH NIDDK-funded Regional Core: Technologies Advancing Translation and Equity. This newly funded regional core is led by Dr. Francisco Pasquel of the Georgia Center for Diabetes Translation Research (PI Dr. Narayan of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health). Dr. Walker will serve as the site PI for UF, joining with Emory scientists focusing on reducing health disparities in diabetes through implementation science to optimize the reach, adoption, impact and sustainability of diabetes technologies.

UF Health scientists part of team published in Science Immunology

A team including two UF Health scientists has found that beneficial immune memory cells persist throughout the body months after infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The article's title published on Science Immunology is "SARS-CoV-2 infection generates tissue-localized immunological memory in humans". Summer 2021 Diabetes Research Travel Grant recipient

ALPCO’s summer 2021 Diabetes Research Travel Grant has been awarded to Mollie Huber, a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in the Biomedical Sciences program at the University of Florida.

Huber’s novel research uses live human and mouse pancreatic tissue slices to study the genuine islet microenvironment in autoimmune Type 1 Diabetes. Her work seeks to address knowledge gaps about how the early stages of diabetes autoimmunity affect islet cell function prior to beta cell loss. Read more

UF Health’s Bruggeman wins grant for two-year Pre-Type 1 Diabetes biomarker study

An NIH “New Investigator Gateway Award for Collaborative T1D Research” has been awarded to Brittany Bruggeman, M.D., assistant professor of pediatric endocrinology at the department of pediatrics. The two-year project’s title is “Natural History and Mechanisms of Exocrine Pancreatic Dysfunction in Pre-Type 1 Diabetes” and Dr. Bruggeman will be working within the TEDDY and TrialNet consortia to determine the natural history of exocrine pancreatic dysfunction in pre-T1D and examine fecal elastase as a potential predictive biomarker of disease.

Walker talks diabetes awareness, prevention and access equity

In this episode of Wellness Talk, and as part of American Diabetes Month, we talked with Dr. Ashby Walker about diabetes awareness, prevention and access equity. Dr. Walker serves as the director for health equity initiatives at the UF Diabetes Institute. Her research as a medical sociologist focuses on Type 1 Diabetes and the role that social capital plays in determining health outcomes. Dr. Walker is an elected member of the American Diabetes Association National Health Disparities Committee and the Chronic Diseases & Conditions Priority Area Workgroup of the 2017–2021 Florida State Health Improvement Plan. Every 23 seconds, another person in the U.S. is diagnosed with diabetes. An often “invisible” illness, diabetes affects 1 in 11 Americans and 86 million more are at risk for the disease.
