IRS will start accepting returns for MeF on 1/15/2025

The IRS has informed all e-File Providers that the Modernized e-File System or MeF will be available for use for Business returns on 1/15/2025. They typically shut the system down in December in order to perform their system updates to support Business and Individual returns in the upcoming processing year. During this outage, no e-file provider with direct access will be able to file returns. Customers who use our software in an indirect fashion, can continue to submit returns however please consider that you will not receive any status information until the system becomes active again.

IRIS (1099s) and AIR (ACA Returns) which are separate systems from MeF are expected to be available for use on 1/10 and 1/13 respectively.

Credit Card Payment Policy change including a late payment surcharge

Over the past few years, we have had a few challenges related to customers who pay with credit card and delayed payments for e-file services.

Starting January 1, 2025, if you are paying your transmission fees via credit card, we ask that you pay for your submissions daily.

Once you transmit the return(s) the product is automatically sent to the cart. If you are filing multiple returns, each one will be sent to the cart and at the end of the day or as you finish filing for that day you will be prompted to pay for those transmissions.

By making this change, it will allow us to more quickly confirm payment and complete processing of returns. If credit card customers don't follow this policy, it may cause delays in the processing of your return(s).

In addition, starting on January 1, 2025, any balance that has not been satisfied within 30 days of the invoice date or date of service will be subject to an additional 15% late payment surcharge.  This surcharge will be levied regardless of the method of payment used during submission.

Amended Returns now supported for Payroll Returns

Our software now supports amended returns, but you won't find these return options in the main create return menu section. Since these returns are based off of a previously submitted return, you need to go to that return in the left pane and right click on it to create an Amended Return. The option will be available for 941's created for TY2024 and later, 940's, 943's, and 945's for TY2023 and later. Earlier returns are not eligible for e-file and cannot be currently created in our software.

Once you have created the return, you will see that column 3 will be populated with the entries from the original return. In most returns, you will simply modify column 2 with the adjusted amount and the rest of the form will be calculated. If this return contains a Schedule R, or 8974 input, those options will not be editable on column 2, but you will have to go to the actual schedule to make those necessary changes which will feed into column 2.

Once all changes are made, the adjusted amount will be shown and if it is a balance due within the IRS payment guidelines, you can pay it during the submission. This payment must be completed using bank information (checking or savings account). The IRS currently does not accept credit card payments within the e-file system.

IRS Payment Guidelines:

  • Form 941, 943, 945 - Payments can be submitted if balance due is under or equal to $2500.00
  • Form 940 - Payments can be submitted if balance due is under or equal to $500.00
