Dear Catholic Charities Supporters
We find ourselves right in the middle of our 2023 Lenten Journey. Lent provides a time to reflect on how we are living our gospel calling. This season also gives rise to action—almsgiving, fasting and penitence. At Catholic Charities we have fully embraced the opportunities that Lent affords us. Gathering as a staff for a Lenten retreat, expertly led by Rev. Melvin Shorter, C.P., Retreat - Master at Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Retreat Center, we were challenged to recognize when we are the hands of Christ and when we need to recognize Christ in others. As staff and delegates assembled for Catholic Days at the Capital last week, we were reminded that when the world overlooks the poor and the vulnerable it is we who must see in them the guiding light of Christ.

It is by no coincidence that we hear these messages at a time when we are more inclined to give to such initiatives as Operation Rice Bowl, or the Long Sleeve Shirt Drive.
Each day at Catholic Charities our interactions with those we serve provide for us a greater understanding of humility, of perseverance, of kindness, and of strength of spirit. It is these interactions that help us truly understand and appreciate that through His Son, God became poor for us. To be sure, there are days when it isn’t easy. We struggle with having the resources available to meet needs. We get bogged down in our processes and can forget the importance of just listening and being present. It is often at those times when we become buoyed by your prayers and your support! In countless ways, you are the means by which we respond to individuals who turn to us for assistance, and help us fully embrace our Lenten calling.
I hope the coming days are grace-filled and that you and yours know fully the blessings of the miracle that is Easter.
