Highlight of Spring Break: Collegiate Challenge 2022
|
|
After being temporarily postponed for a year, Collegiate Challenge started back this year - and it was better than ever.
Sumter Habitat for Humanity hosted student volunteers for the 28th year during Collegiate Challenge 2022. On Sunday, March 6, nine students from Boston College's Appa Volunteer Chapter arrived in Sumter to assist with Sumter Habitat for Humanity's 128th Habitat Home Build in the Sumter Habitat designated neighborhood, Fuller Gardens.
APPA, or the Appalachia Volunteers, is a program committed to building communities through loving, learning, and serving in Appalachia and beyond. Surprisingly, before this trip, NONE of these students had ever met before, even though they go to the same college!

A Word From One of Our Student Volunteers

By Hannah Scott
My favorite Ted Talk (a relatively short talk intended to inspire and educate about a certain topic) is called “The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I have watched the talk countless times, and each time I am struck by the way in which she talks about all that you can lose when you enter a new space with a singular story of how it will be. Call this stereotyping or just human nature, but it is a real struggle that we are faced with every day; to allow our minds to wander with preconceived notions and not to ask ourselves to go deeper.
The Appalachia Volunteers program at Boston College, in our space about social justice issues, talks about the importance of stories, and how by listening to others we can be challenged to change. Before we embark on our journey each Spring Break we are told...Click here to continue reading

During one moment of our shared lunch with Boston College students, I brought up super-powers. Because greed, although slight, runs through my veins, I said I wanted two: to be fully present in multiple locations at the same time and to understand and speak every—yep—every language that exists around the globe. Now why, you may ask, would such a topic be brought to the table. Because our lunch table was graced with a group of amazing young people and I wished it possible to observe their remarkable futures. These were young people whose arms are wide open to the world and they are embracing it fully...Read more

Hooray for Homeownership!

Carlton McBride
Fellowship, celebration, and a new home to usher in the new season for the McBride family.
On Wednesday, March 23rd, something was happening in Fuller Gardens as cars lined the street of Habitat Drive, and people were gathering in front of a home that had otherwise been vacant for quite some time until that day. For the Sumter Habitat for Humanity team, the crowd gathering in front of our very eyes was a touching and meaningful sight. They were friends and family of Carlton McBride and his son who were coming out in support of Carlton’s desire, perseverance, and the hard work it required to get him to homeownership.
|
|
Executive Director of Sumter Habitat for Humanity, Theresa White, welcomed the crowd and introduced the proud future homeowner who was at a loss for words and could only say thank you for the help that he had received in making a long-time dream a reality. Carlton’s home was blessed by Pastor Richard James, followed by a Litany read by SHFH Financial Administrator Phyllis Haskins. Kate McElveen, Price Marketing and Resource Development Director for SHFH, then presented Mr. McBride with a Holy Bible to serve as a reminder from whom all blessings flow.
Pastor James offered a closing prayer, followed by a ribbon. Then was the moment we were ALL waiting for: the passing of the keys. Once the ceremony concluded, friends and family of the McBrides were invited to take a tour of the home and even enjoy someone delicious refreshments provided by Mr. McBride’s supportive and loving fan club!
For all of us at Sumter Habitat for Humanity, dedication days are what it is all about for us. Nothing fulfills us more and gives us a “mission accomplished” feeling than seeing a family or individual in our homeownership program elevate to the next and ultimate level of homeownership. We wish the McBride family years of love, laughter, and joy in the place they can now officially call “Home Sweet Home.”

Keeping the Sumter community healthy isn’t the only way the folks at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital give back and support the residents of Sumter.
On Thursday, 16 volunteers from Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital pushed up their sleeves and traded a stethoscope for a hammer to volunteer on the worksite of one of Sumter Habitat’s current home builds.
The build was part of the largest single-day multi-site construction project in the state for Habitat, and it was made possible by donations and volunteers from Prisma Health. We are already thankful enough for our Health Care Heroes, but our respect and appreciation for the Tuomey Team Members, who are now home build heroes as well!
