A smooth ride along the 18-mile stretch thanks to project completion

Commuting on the 18-Mile Stretch along State Road (S.R.) 5/U.S. 1/Overseas Highway, from Mile Marker (MM) 108.4 to the Miami-Dade County line at MM 112.8, will be smoother.

The Florida Department of Transportation team completed the roadway project in March. The project included reconstructing, repaving and restriping the travel lanes to improve safety and long-term resiliency. Right-turn lanes were reconfigured to better accommodate bicyclists, along with updated guardrail and enhanced signage. The project started in August 2024 and was completed in March 2026.

Because this corridor is heavily traveled by residents, visitors, and commercial vehicles, the reconstruction required exceptional coordination and an extensive public outreach plan. FDOT partnered closely with Miami-Dade County, Monroe County, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the Monroe County Sherriff's Office (MCSO), and the Upper Keys and South Florida communities to ensure that traffic continued to flow with minimal disruption. Measures such as temporary lane widening, carefully scheduled off-peak lane closures with detours to Card Sound Road, and ongoing public communication helped maintain mobility along this scenic and critical transportation link.

Safety and roadway improvements are ongoing in Key West

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is nearing completion of the S.R. 5/U.S. 1/North Roosevelt Boulevard Improvement Project in Key West. This safety and mobility initiative extends from north of Eisenhower Drive to S.R. A1A/South Roosevelt Boulevard. Improvements include upgrading lighting and traffic signals, installing detectable warnings, reconstructing curbs and ramps, modifying bridge railings, and guardrail upgrading on the inbound side of the Salt Run Channel Bridge.

Crews also repaved and resurfaced the roadway and refreshed pavement markings to extend the corridor's lifespan and improve visibility for all users. FDOT’s commitment to minimizing impacts during construction included phased work schedules and nighttime lane closures, ensuring that traffic flow and access to businesses and residences were maintained throughout the project. Construction began in September 2025 and is expected to be completed by summer 2026.

W 41 Street bridge and Collins Avenue roadway set for a fresh look

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) continues to work on improving S.R. A1A/Collins Avenue from 44 Street to the 4700 block, Indian Creek Drive from 41 Street to 44 Street, and the S.R. 112/W 41 Street bridge over the Indian Creek Waterway in the City of Miami Beach. The project includes roadway, pedestrian, and bridge improvements designed to enhance safety and mobility for motorists and pedestrians. Key elements of the work include upgrading pedestrian ramps and crossings, sidewalk and curb reconstruction, roadway widening, shifting the median along Indian Creek Drive, resurfacing and striping, and installing new pavement markings and lighting upgrades. The project also includes improving Indian Creek Drive and the W 41 Street intersection by adding a second right-turn lane and new signalization. In addition, the S.R. 112/W 41 Street bridge is undergoing rehabilitation including improvements to the bridge deck, structural steel, expansion joints, and handrails.

Community outreach and coordination have been essential with ongoing engagement with the City of Miami Beach Mayor's Office and Commissioners, the Mid-Beach Neighborhood Association (MBNA). and adjacent stakeholders to keep the community informed and address considerations throughout construction. The project began in August 2025 and is anticipated to be completed in the Summer of 2026.

GGI ramp opens for FIFA World Cup Games

The Golden Glades Interchange (GGI) Project continues making impressive progress as construction advances ahead of schedule at one of South Florida’s busiest transportation hubs, where more than 400,000 vehicles travel each day. One of the project’s most anticipated improvements is the new direct connect ramp from eastbound S.R. 826/Palmetto Expressway to northbound I-95, which is scheduled to open to traffic prior to the FIFA World Cup games at Hard Rock Stadium. This new connection will provide major relief for daily commuters by creating a direct route to northbound I-95 and eliminating the need to navigate local streets such as S.R. 7/U.S. 441/NW 7 Avenue or NW 167 Street to reach the interstate. Other major improvements continue taking shape throughout the interchange, including new bridges, widened roadways, and upgraded connections designed to enhance safety, improve mobility, and reduce congestion for our community.

I-395 Design-Build Project is on the move!

On the move! The I-395/S.R. 836/I-95 Design-Build Project’s 488-foot gantry (cap and beam launcher) is advancing once again. It has been “launched” to construct the span between Pier 13 and Pier 14, located just over the Miami River.

The gantry is used to erect four 90-ton pier caps—two placed on each side of the pier—and to install Florida I-Beams (FIBs), which range from 108 to 190 feet in length and weigh approximately 110 tons. These structures will support the new viaduct over the existing S.R. 836 roadway.

Once this phase is complete, the gantry will be deployed to Pier 15 to repeat the operation over the Miami River’s navigable channel.

The project team is coordinating with the United States Coast Guard and Miami River stakeholders to ensure awareness of the operation. No impacts to the navigable channel are anticipated. Work is being performed at night and requires full closures in both directions of S.R. 836.

FDOT kicks off new project along S.R. 886/Port Boulevard

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has launched a pavement rehabilitation project along S.R. 886/Port Boulevard from S.R. 5/U.S. 1/Biscayne Boulevard to PortMiami, home to the Cruise Capital of the World. The project is anticipated to be completed late by 2026.

These improvements will enhance roadway conditions for the thousands of drivers traveling to and from the port each day. Construction is anticipated to be completed in approximately eight months, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

Steady progress on the S.R. 90/U.S. 41/SW 8 Street Pedestrian Bridge Project

Crews continue making progress on the reconstruction of the SW 8 Street Pedestrian Bridge connecting the City of Sweetwater to Florida International University (FIU). Major milestones this quarter include the concrete deck pour forming the bridge walkway, construction of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) elevator towers, and installation of the pedestrian safety barrier wall.

Up next is installing a new canopy that will provide much-needed shade for pedestrians once the bridge is completed!

Miami Lakes receives a new shared-use path

Finishing ahead of schedule, FDOT successfully completed a $3.4 million roadway improvement project along S.R. 826/Frontage Road/NW 77 Court from NW 154 Street to NW 164 Street. As part of the project, pedestrians and cyclists can enjoy a new shared-use path along NW 77 Court, adjacent to the Bob Graham Education Center, along with a new flashing beacon crosswalk, creating a safer and more convenient route for the surrounding community. Completion is anticipated for early 2027.

Roadwork wraps up at City of Miami intersection: S.R. 5/US 1 and SW 17 Avenue

FDOT completed an intersection project at S.R. 5/US 1/S Dixie Highway and SW 17 Avenue. The project scope included upgrading vehicular signalization by adding dedicated green arrow left-turn signals in both directions and extending existing left-turn lanes to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. Additional work included repaving and restriping the roadway, concrete median modifying, upgrading traffic separators, and enhancing safety guardrails to support safer travel for motorists. The project will provide safety and enhance traffic flow.

SR 934/NW 78 Street and NW 32 Avenue project gets a facelift

Improvements at the intersection of SR 934/NW 79 Street and NW 32 Avenue have been completed including new traffic signals, upgrades to pedestrian and vehicular signal equipment, improved signage, and clearly marked crosswalks. The project also incorporated updated vehicle detection technology, allowing traffic signals to operate more efficiently and respond more effectively to real-time traffic conditions.

SR 953/SR 952/LeJeune Rd/SW 42 Avenue roadway project is ongoing

The Florida Department of Transportation is advancing the S.R. 953/SR 952 LeJeune Road / SW 42 Avenue Roadway Project in the City of Miami and the City of Coral Gables to improve roadway operations, pedestrian safety, and overall community connectivity.

The project includes reconstructing sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; upgrading pedestrian signage; installing No Turn on Red signage at key intersections; replacing traffic guardrails; repaving and restriping the roadway; and upgrading traffic and pedestrian signals with new video detection technology. Construction began in October 2025 and is anticipated to be completed by Summer 2026.
