Breaking the silence: menopause and its effect on oral health

In September, Delta Dental Insurance Company released its second Oral Health and Menopause Report, a nationwide analysis of women 40 years of age or older who are going through a stage of menopause. The report reveals that more than a third (35%) of women aged 40 and over say they’ve experienced a decline in their overall oral health as they age, unaware that some of the oral health symptoms commonly associated with aging could be related to menopause.

Community Impact Forum

The Delta Dental Institute convenes its Community Impact Forum in Chicago

In September, the Delta Dental Institute (DDI) hosted its annual Community Impact Forum in Chicago. This gathering brought together over 45 foundation and community leaders from Delta Dental companies nationwide to exchange ideas and collaborate on innovative approaches to improving oral and overall health outcomes.

The program opened with a keynote address from L. Anton Seals Jr., lead steward and executive director of the Grow Greater Englewood Foundation, who discussed how to create lasting change and impact. We also welcomed community affairs leaders from Northwestern Medicine, who shared valuable insights on building stronger communities by helping to remove barriers to better health.

We were proud to support Fleece & Thank You, an organization that provides children’s hospitals across multiple states with colorful fleece blankets for children undergoing treatments. Attendees helped make blankets and recorded personalized video messages of support. Thank you to everyone who made this year’s Forum a success!

Supporting dental care for veterans

Delta Dental of North Carolina supported the ECU School of Dental Medicine's Smiles for Veterans event, which provides preventive care and necessary procedures, including fillings, extractions, and more, at no cost to veterans who do not have access to dental care. The funding helped provide quality oral health care to veterans in need, as only about 10% of veterans qualify for dental benefits from the Veterans Administration, and an estimated 90,000 veterans live in poverty in North Carolina.

Conference Photo

Delta Dental Plans Association hosts its Government Affairs, Legal, and Compliance Conference in Washington, D.C.

In early September, Delta Dental Plans Association hosted its Government Affairs, Legal, and Compliance Conference in Washington, D.C. Over 40 Delta Dental company representatives joined together for a multi-day event centered on the Future of Advocacy, including a keynote address from Major Garrett, Chief Washington Correspondent at CBS News, and a special presentation from Dr. Natalia Chalmers, the first-ever Chief Dental Officer at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

A key part of the conference was an advocacy day on Capitol Hill. Representatives met with elected officials across the country to discuss legislative and policy priorities to advance access to oral health care.

Additionally, attendees had the opportunity to volunteer to create 1,000 oral health hygiene kits, which were donated to Mary’s Center, a community health center that has been serving over 65,000 people of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds in the Washington, D.C., metro area for 35 years, offering individualized care on the path toward good health, stability, and economic independence.

Thank you to our participants for making this conference such a success!
