Psalm 121: A Song of Ascents

I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come?

My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;

he who keeps you will not slumber.

He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;

the Lord is your shade at your right hand.

The sun shall not strike you by day nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in

from this time on and forevermore.

Palm Sunday: Choir & Orchestra

During the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday, the SCAPC Chancel Choir and Orchestra will perform Mack Wilberg’s Requiem, heralded for its “judicious use of both time-honored craftsmanship and a near-cinematic orchestral style that makes the work accessible yet eloquent”. The crowd will be large so arrive early for the best seats!

Palm Procession: All children wishing to participate in the palm procession at the beginning of the 10:30 service should gather in the Narthex at 10:20.

We will have them scrubbed and brought back to their factory settings. Non-Apple products are preferred. Our college students will bring them down in May. Please drop off at the church office. Contact Michele Murphy with any questions.

Breadmaking as a Spiritual Practice

Many people observe the Lenten period with various spiritual practices, among those breadmaking, which can be a metaphor for God's care of each one of us: the rising, the kneading and the shaping. Come and explore this topic during Holy Week.

On Wednesday, March 27 from 6:00-8:30 in the Land Building we will enjoy dinner, faith discussion, and breadmaking. We will prepare the communion bread for the Maundy Thursday service. Each participant will have a loaf of bread to take home as well. The cost is $15/person and your check, delivered to Pierce in the church office, is your reservation. Please reserve by noon on Monday, March 25.

Good Friday Walking Pilgrimage

On Good Friday, March 29, Miriam Hollar will lead a walk down Magazine Street to visit nine churches. We will meet at 8 a.m. in front of St. Theresa of Avila, 1404 Erato Street and return to SCAPC no later than 11:40. The pilgrimage will finish in our sanctuary with the noon Good Friday Service. Learn about the Good Friday walking tradition at the Lenten Spiritual Practices Sunday School class this Sunday, 9:15 a.m. in the Land Building Riverside Room. Detailed handouts will be distributed at Sunday's class, or you can email Miriam to request one.

Sunday School Details & Recordings

Current Classes for Adults

New! PHILIPPIANS AND GALATIANS

March 24 - May 19 | Phifer Library | to be led by John Galbraith

The letters to the Philippian and Galatian congregations illustrate the passion and intensity of Paul's writing. Together these letters provide a compelling portrait of a theologian and social critic of rare power and insight whose legacy continues today to spark heated debate. If we can catch even a little of Paul's vision, we are likely to be transformed. We may find ourselves called, like Paul himself, to a fresh vision of what God is doing in the world and to participation in the crucified body of Christ. Class recordings will be posted following each session.

This coming Sunday' class, "Joy and Thanksgiving for the Philippine Congregation" will be led by Janet Bean.

LENTEN SPIRITUAL PRACTICES

February 18- March 24 | Land Building Riverside Room

The 40 days of Lent are a time for self-reflection, personal growth, and spiritual pilgrimage. In this class on Sunday mornings we have been discussing different practices and pilgrimages, and during the week we have undertaken walking pilgrimages. Click here for the recording of this past Sunday's class on the practice of labyrinth walking, led by Sarah Chancellor-Watson.

This coming Sunday, the class topic will be the tradition of Good Friday walking pilgrimages in New Orleans, led by Miriam Hollar. There will be an optional pilgrimage next Friday, March 29. See "Good Friday Walking Pilgrimage" announcement above for details.

THE SECULOSITY OF MARRIAGE & PARENTING

January 7 - March 24 | 2nd floor conference room | to be led by Tyler Wheeler

Statistics show that fewer and fewer Americans are attending church, but author David Zahl argues that we are in fact more religious than ever. Using his funny and insightful book, Seculosity, we have been digging deeper into three of the areas that can consume us as adults - Busyness, Relationships, and Parenting – and learn what to do about it.

This coming Sunday's class will be led by Tyler Wheeler.

New Classes Beginning April 7

CALLED AS PARTNERS IN CHRIST'S SERVICE

April 7 - April 28 | Land Building Riverside Room

Jesus tells us the greatest commandment is to “love God with our whole heart, soul, body, and mind, and to love our neighbors as ourselves.” Our faith is one that is not merely an intellectual or personal spiritual pursuit, but one that encompasses our whole lives and influences the ways in which we interact with others and the world. Join us as we further explore what it means to follow Christ into this call of service to others. We’ll explore the theological and scriptural underpinnings of discipleship, mission, ministry, and the Church. We will be discussing current “best practices” of mission and how together we can make the greatest impact on our community.

DEVOTIONALS FOR A "GOOD ENOUGH" LIFE

April 7 - April 28 | 2nd foor conference room

Over the past few weeks, we have explored the human compulsion to consistently “measure up” in our careers, relationships, parenting, and more through David Zahl’s book Seculosity. To close the semester, we will shift our discussion from the search for “enoughness” to spiritual reflections on living a “good enough” life. Using devotionals from Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie’s book Good Enough, we will discuss embracing a life of faith, honesty, and interdependence in a world that celebrates endless progress.
