Who's HEPA ??

The TRUTH about filtration...Can YOU tell the difference?

Greetings!

HEPA here, HEPA there, HEPA HEPA everywhere! On any given trip to the department store, you're likely to find huge displays of vacuum cleaners in expertly designed boxes and plastered with stickers claiming "HEPA filtration." Should you believe the claims they make? Do you even know what HEPA means and is it really something of concern to you?

Who is actually
(if you're impatient - click link to skip to the >>  ANSWER)

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air (filtration). This classification was created to define the effectiveness of filtration material, or filter cartridges alone. So when manufacturers apply the word "HEPA" to an entire vacuum cleaner, it can be misleading. Here's why...

From Wikipedia: "Many vacuum cleaners use HEPA filters as part of their filtration systems. This is beneficial for asthma and allergy sufferers, because the HEPA filter traps the fine particles...which trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. For a HEPA filter in a vacuum cleaner to be effective, the vacuum cleaner must be designed so that all the air drawn into the machine is expelled through the filter, with none of the air leaking past it. This is often referred to as "Sealed HEPA" or "True HEPA." Vacuum cleaners simply labeled HEPA have a HEPA filter, but not all air necessarily passes through it."

See the problem? Erika, master technician and manger of our Neptune City Store, explains it well: "Not every vacuum cleaner that utilizes a HEPA media filter operates at HEPA-level specifications! Poorly-fitting joints and seams and/or inflexible body materials can allow dirty air to leak out of the machine before it ever has a chance to pass through the filtration media. So one could strap 18 HEPA filters to a crummy vacuum, and it will still not exhaust clean air like a quality vacuum will!"

John, master technician and Co-owner of Queen Vacuum,
describes the other unseen problems with poorly-sealed vacuum cleaners: "It's not just the dust that comes out of the vacuum (into your air) that's a problem. When vacuums are poorly sealed on the inside, dusty air makes its way into the motor and electronics systems where it can short them out prematurely! It's more costly to produce a quality machine that can maintain a seal against microscopic particles while bumping around your house. But the investment always proves worth it when your home atmosphere is truly clean, and your vacuum lasts 10-20 years. I've been in this business for a long time, and I've never seen vacuums work as well or last as long and the German brands like Miele."

ANSWERSo, did you guess correctly? The only one who is HEPA in the above image is #5 - The Miele S5 canister! With high-filtration disposable bags, a genuine HEPA media exhaust filter cartridge and a True Sealed system body, Miele is the real deal! Here's why the others fall short...

1. The Eureka Optima does utilize HEPA media as a primary filter in its dirt bin. However, there is no proper exhaust filter to capture motor emissions, and the unit itself is not truly "sealed."

2. Panasonic Upright. Sorry, no fooling us here, HEPA filters taped to the outside don't count!

3. Silly Rachel.... As fashionable as a HEPA hat might be, this doesn't improve her filtration.

4. Adam may pump a lot of iron, but pumping HEPA filters does not make him "HEPA" either.

5. The Hoover Windtunnel Bagged Upright is very convincing. This model does use a HEPA exhaust filter and has a sticker that says so! But the machine itself does not maintain a true seal, and does leak moderately.
