QUEENS CENTER FOR GAY SENIORS TAKES THE STAGE AT THE UN

On September 22, 20 LGBTQIA+ elders and allies from the Queens Center for Gay Seniors (QCGS) joined DanceStream Projects dancers to perform “Let’s Move the World” at the UN General Assembly Healing Arts Week Research Symposium, held at NYU's Kimmel Center. The event was produced by the Jameel Arts & Health Lab and the World Health Organization, and the QCGS performance took place immediately following the keynote by Dr. Daisy Fancourt, a global leader in research on the arts and health.

Created by the older adults participants, “Let’s Move the World” showcased their vision for change — celebrating community, acceptance, resilience, and belonging. Performed before an audience of more than 400 people, the piece moved attendees to tears and concluded with a standing ovation.

The collaboration was led by Magda Kaczmarska, founder of DanceStream Projects and a proud member of the QCH Queens Team — a group of local leaders and creators who partner with QCH to uplift Queens neighbors. Earlier this year, Magda marched alongside QCGS at Queens Pride and continues to bring dance programming to older adults across QCH, including those in our Social Adult Day Services program.

Through this performance, QCGS participants reminded us all that aging is not just about growing older — it’s about continuing to thrive, express, and inspire.

REGO PARK OLDER ADULTS CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

The Rego Park Older Adult Center recently came alive with the sights, sounds, and flavors of Hispanic Heritage Day. Neighbors proudly represented their countries—Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Panama—sharing their traditions with the community.

The celebration featured lively Spanish music and dancing, delicious homemade dishes, and a colorful, festive atmosphere. The joy was contagious, as Spanish and non-Spanish participants alike joined together to celebrate, connect, and form new friendships.

Events like these highlight the richness of our diverse community, creating space for older adults to share their heritage while learning from one another. At QCH, every culture has a place at the table—and every celebration brings us closer together.

QCH is celebrating 50 years of impact and community building across the borough! We're continuing our "50 for 50" series, honoring people – past and current –who embody the QCH spirit.

“I first heard about QCH in 2015, when my church shared flyers about English classes, housing help, and immigration services. Parishioners were already going to QCH, and I saw how valuable those resources were. That’s when I began to learn about this wonderful organization.

My connection grew through Anna Dioguardi Moyano, Director of Community Engagement, who I often met at community meetings. She knew I was involved in my church’s social justice committee and invited me to join QCH as a Census outreach worker in 2020. When the pandemic closed everything down, I shifted to phone outreach. I made hundreds of calls — not only helping people complete the census, but also checking in to ask how they were doing. For me, those calls were more than a job; they kept me connected during a very difficult and lonely time.

After the census, I joined QCH’s Community Action Group and later became a Community Organizer. We worked on issues that mattered most to neighbors — cleaner parks, safer streets, and now, affordable housing through Queens Power’s “Public Land for Public Good” campaign. This fight is personal. I lived for nearly three decades in a basement apartment without proper heat, and I know too many families struggling under similar conditions. Even if only some families benefit, affordable housing brings dignity, stability, and hope for future generations.

What I love about QCH is that it brings people together — seniors, families, new immigrants, longtime residents — and shows them they have a voice. Whether it’s English classes, afterschool programs, or neighbors organizing for change, QCH helps people feel less alone and more powerful. I’m proud to be part of that mission: turning our stories into action that makes Queens stronger, healthier, and more inclusive for all.”
