In Memoriam: Alan Quigley
As I was starting to work on this month's QuiC newsletter, I saw the announcement about Alan Quigley's death (here's a link to it). Though I didn't know Alan very well, he and I had chatted many times at various QuiC events. One thing he had mentioned to me a few times was that he went way back in his involvement with LGBT-related activities at Saint Mark's. I had always hoped to be able to have coffee sometime with Alan to learn more about his involvement in these things. But sadly, that never happened.
So in the last few days, I've had some conversations with others at Saint Mark's who have known Alan over the years. Alan was one of the mainstays of the new Gay and Lesbian organization when it formed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Integrity USA. A diocesan chapter of Integrity formed, and a group coalesced around a Sunday evening liturgy for a number of years. Different people came and went in leadership, but Alan was always a consistent presence and support for the group. The group also enjoyed pot lucks in Leffler Living room on many Sunday evenings after they worshiped together.
Alan was also known for his eccentric wardrobe...it wasn't unusual to see him dressed in sequins, or from time to time, wearing red pumps! He certainly had a flare for panache, and always with a smile on his face.
Every single person I spoke to talked about Alan's soft-spoken and loving presence. He had a chronic heart condition, and so was often seen in the background, laying low. But every person he connected with remembers him fondly. Even if it was just a connection from a glance and a smile, he exuded love and grace.
We at Saint Mark's are blessed to have had Alan in our midst for so many years. His calm and caring presence will be missed by many of us. Plans for his funeral are in the works, and we will be sure and share details when they are made known. For now, let us keep Alan and his family and friends in prayer. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
