Queer Conversations: Queering Climate Activism

This Sunday, April 7 at 5:30pm

in Leffler Living Room

At the next Queer Conversation, we will be joined by The Rev. Lisa Graumlich, former Saint Mark's Parishioner, recently ordained deacon (serving at Trinity Parish), and Dean Emerita of the College of the Environment at UW. She will lead us in a conversation themed around the article shared a few months ago, Queering Climate Activism. We will have refreshments starting at 5:30, and the conversation will start about 5:45. If you'd prefer to join us via Zoom, email Michael Seewer (mseewer@saintmarks.org) for the Zoom link!

Looking forward: at the Queer Conversation on May 5, we will be joined by Saint Mark's newest canon priest, The Rev. Canon Rich Weyls, for an informal conversation to get to know him better! Come and meet Canon Rich and learn about his journey from ordination in the Roman Catholic Church to reception in The Episcopal Church, his marriage to his husband Mark in 2017 at Saint Mark's, and more.

In Memoriam: Alan Quigley

As I was starting to work on this month's QuiC newsletter, I saw the announcement about Alan Quigley's death (here's a link to it). Though I didn't know Alan very well, he and I had chatted many times at various QuiC events. One thing he had mentioned to me a few times was that he went way back in his involvement with LGBT-related activities at Saint Mark's. I had always hoped to be able to have coffee sometime with Alan to learn more about his involvement in these things. But sadly, that never happened.

So in the last few days, I've had some conversations with others at Saint Mark's who have known Alan over the years. Alan was one of the mainstays of the new Gay and Lesbian organization when it formed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Integrity USA. A diocesan chapter of Integrity formed, and a group coalesced around a Sunday evening liturgy for a number of years. Different people came and went in leadership, but Alan was always a consistent presence and support for the group. The group also enjoyed pot lucks in Leffler Living room on many Sunday evenings after they worshiped together.

Alan was also known for his eccentric wardrobe...it wasn't unusual to see him dressed in sequins, or from time to time, wearing red pumps! He certainly had a flare for panache, and always with a smile on his face.

Every single person I spoke to talked about Alan's soft-spoken and loving presence. He had a chronic heart condition, and so was often seen in the background, laying low. But every person he connected with remembers him fondly. Even if it was just a connection from a glance and a smile, he exuded love and grace.

We at Saint Mark's are blessed to have had Alan in our midst for so many years. His calm and caring presence will be missed by many of us. Plans for his funeral are in the works, and we will be sure and share details when they are made known. For now, let us keep Alan and his family and friends in prayer. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

SAVE THE DATE: Pride Month Forum on June 12

Save the Date! Mark your calendars for the evening of June 12 when Saint Mark's will host a Pride Month Forum in Bloedel Hall. Details of the forum are being planned, but this will be an event geared for the entire cathedral community to learn about why Pride is important to the queer community, and provide an opportunity for education and fellowship. We hope that as many people from the queer community at Saint Mark's as possible can join us, so please consider joining us!

Snapshot from Trans Day of Visibility

Thanks to all who joined us for the brunch after the 11am Easter Day liturgy celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility. And thanks to Rose for taking this snapshot of the event!

Saint Mark’s Cathedral acknowledges that we gather on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People, who are still here, and we honor with gratitude the land itself and the life of all the Coast Salish tribes. [Learn more]
