Complete Streets Update

Quick Build Demonstration Projects

June 12, 2026

Dear Neighbors,

If you drive in Fairfield, you may have noticed that the Department of Public Works has installed eleven Quick Build Demonstration projects around Town. These "Quick Builds" are designed to create a safer and more predictable environment for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.

Quick Build improvements can be installed rapidly and adjusted based on community feedback and observed traffic patterns. We encourage you to experience these changes firsthand and share your input as we continue working to make Fairfield’s roadways safer, more accessible, and more comfortable for everyone.

You can provide feedback on the demonstration projects on the Town website: https://fairfieldct.gov/.../complete_streets/contact_us.php

The eleven locations are:

  • South Benson Road at Old Post Road
  • South Benson Road at Riverside Drive
  • South Benson Road at Judson Street
  • South Benson Road at “Bend” (opposite Benson Place)

  • Mill Plain Road at Unquowa Road
  • Mill Plain Road at Pell Meadow
  • Mill Plain Road at Riverfield School

  • Sturges Road at Unquowa Road West
  • Sturges Road at Old Mill Road
  • Sturges Road at Bronson Road (opposite Oliver’s Nursery)

  • Pequot Avenue at Chester Place

More about Quick Builds:

The projects use cost-effective, flexible materials, such as pavement markings, delineator posts, and centerline hardening treatments to quickly implement roadway safety enhancements while allowing us to evaluate their effectiveness.

In the photo above at Bronson Road and Sturges Road, delineators are used to demonstrate a lane reduction. Delineators are highly visible guidance dividers, used to direct traffic, separate lanes, and mark boundaries to protect pedestrians and cyclists.

The new installations also include curb extensions, median treatments and centerline hardening, all designed to calm traffic, improve visibility, and create safer crossings for pedestrians.

These treatments help reduce turning speeds, shorten crossing distances, and better define travel lanes, making our streets safer and more predictable for all users.

The photo above at South Benson Road shows a curb extension. Curb extensions narrow travel lanes around crosswalks and slow turning vehicles down, especially where pedestrian conflicts may exist. They also shorten the pedestrian crossing distance, which lessens the time pedestrians are within the travel lane.

The photo above on South Benson Road opposite Benson Place shows centerline hardening. Centerline hardening is an intervention that uses raised speed humps placed along the double yellow centerline at intersections. These serve to prevent drivers from cutting corners when making left turns. They also encourage drivers to turn left at a slower speed, helping minimize crashes and crash severity.

In this photo, a lane is being removed at Mill Plain Road and Unquowa Road to lessen confusion at the intersection. Reducing the number of travel lanes slows speeds and reduces the number of conflict points for vehicles and pedestrians. The crosswalk distance here is also shortened so pedestrians spend less time in the travel lanes.

Your comments will be reviewed by the Public Works and Engineering Departments, along with the First Selectperson's Office.
