"What can I do to show my support for the work of racial equity?"
In the DEI Division, our staff members been receiving this question frequently in recent weeks, in light of recent increased attention to these issues across the country and around the world.
In our division, we have developed a practical three-step model to answer this question, informed by the Ignatian pedagogical paradigm:
"TREEE": Tackling Racism: Educate, Engage, Effect.
For more information about the model, or to schedule a webinar presentation for your department, division or group about this topic, please email
diversity@jcu.edu.

We are working on developing additional resource guides on other DEI topics. Please submit requests or suggestions to our online

A Dozen-Plus Ways
You Can Foster Educational Equity
Viji Sathy, Kelly A. Hogan and Calvin M. Sims, July 1, 2020
Recently on social media, we have seen a lot of people posting ways white and non-Black people of color can support the Black Lives Matter movement. Like many of you, we’ve taken these suggestions to heart and taken action in various ways.
We think analogous lists tailored to educators and administrators in higher education are warranted and needed. Since the U.S. professoriate is
majority
white, some faculty members may not recognize the power and privilege they hold to dismantle educational inequities. For those who recognize that and are looking for practical ways to translate this, we hope to start a list

In the Headlines: New ICE Guidance
New U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) guidance, issued earlier this week, states that international students on F-1 and M-1 visas must leave the United States if they are taking all of their classes online.
The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities states that this move
"derails our mission-driven efforts to provide a quality Jesuit education by creating unnecessary and near insurmountable barriers for international students."
Harvard University and MIT have filed a lawsuit this week against the Trump Administration to halt implementation of the new rule.
Our Global Education office has already reached out to current international students at JCU to communicate how this might affect them. Any students with questions about their visa status should reach out to Megan McBride, Assistant Director of International Services, for guidance on their particular situation.
