For the first time in 13 years, the American Academy of Pediatrics has updated its policy on recess. As schools have reduced unstructured play in pursuit of academics, research has only grown stronger. Recess should not be a reward or a privilege. It's a biological and developmental necessity for students of all ages. When schools withhold recess for behavioral reasons, the children who lose it are the ones who need it most.
