THE SERI ASSURANCE PROGRAM | PART 4: WITNESS INSPECTIONS
Last month, we explored spot inspections as a key component of the SERI R2 Assurance Program. If you missed it or want a refresher, visit our website for the full story.
This month, we're concluding our series with a look at witness inspections.
Witness inspections are an important part of SERI's comprehensive approach to maintaining R2 Certification consistency. These announced observations of auditors during actual facility audits provide valuable insights into how Certification Bodies and auditors apply the R2 Standard. To complete your understanding of the Assurance Program, click below to learn how witness inspections contribute to the continuous improvement of the R2 Certification program.

ESG AND R2 TAC MEETINGS: OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AT eSUMMIT
eSummit 2024 offers a unique chance to observe the development of electronics sustainability standards in two pre-summit meetings on Tuesday, October 22.
The R2 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) Meeting will feature discussions on current industry issues. This meeting will take place from 8 a.m.–10 a.m.
The SERI ESG Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) Meeting will focus on the development of our new ESG Reporting Standard for Electronics, examining key environmental, social, and governance metrics specific to the electronics value chain. This meeting will take place from 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
These meetings provide opportunities to listen and learn about these important initiatives. Public attendees will have a chance to observe the process and offer comments.

THERE'S STILL TIME TO JOIN THE IMPACT MEASUREMENT WORKING GROUP
As previously shared, SERI is developing its first-ever Impact Report to showcase the sustainability efforts of R2 Certified Facilities and our industry. The voluntary Impact Measurement Working Group will hold its first of four monthly, two-hour virtual meetings in September to begin collaborating on which metrics to collect and how we'll communicate our collective impact. And there’s still room for more volunteers! This is your chance to contribute to an important ESG initiative highlighting our industry's role in creating a more sustainable future for electronics. If you’re interested in participating, please email us using the button below.
FACILITIES CAN NOW BEGIN THE PROCESS OF CERTIFYING TO APPENDIX G FOR PV MODULES
We're excited to announce that facilities can now become certified to R2 Appendix G for Photovoltaic (PV) Modules. As solar energy gains prominence in the push for cleaner power, proper management of PV modules is crucial. This certification allows professionals to demonstrate their commitment to responsibly handling these materials. To support this initiative, we've added Level 1 and Level 2 training videos to our Knowledge Base, along with a growing Q&A section. Whether you're already managing PV modules or considering them for the future, we encourage you to download the latest R2 version from our Document Library and explore the possibilities of Appendix G certification.
THIS eSUMMIT TIP BROUGHT TO YOU BY PLATINUM SPONSOR
WHEN IN AUSTIN, PAIR THE eSUMMIT WITH OUR INSIDER DINING TIPS!
While in Austin, Texas, attending the eSummit, you will have an incredible number of options for great places to eat. It's no secret that Austin strives to keep things weird, and this sentiment extends to its culinary scene. The ample selection of excellent Tex-Mex and barbecue is a given at this point. But not everyone knows that this is the city where everyone tests out ideas with food trucks. Our team's three personal favorites are listed below, and a link to more dining experiences is also provided!
|
Ski Shores Cafe
Ski Shores Cafe has been a landmark lakefront destination on Lake Austin known for its laid-back vibe, family-friendly fun, griddled burgers and fried catfish.
| |
|
Franklin Barbecue
The longest line in Austin, world famous Franklin Barbecue has been credited with leading the new-traditionalist barbecue movement. Their menu consists of pulled pork, pork ribs, sausages, turkey and brisket.
| |
|
La Barbecue
Considered one of the holy grails of the Austin barbecue scene. Here they specialize, appropriately, in Central Texas-style barbecue, slathering meats with salty, savory rubs.

R2 TIP: VIDEO RECORDING REQUIREMENTS IN APPENDIX B
R2 Facilities certified to Appendix B may have up to two separate R2 requirements to use video cameras to safeguard data. Appendix B(5)(c) requires all facilities certified to Appendix B to use closed-circuit camera systems to cover all areas of the facility where data-bearing equipment or components are received, stored, or pass through, and to maintain the video recordings for at least 60 days. The other requirement, Appendix B(9), states that video recordings of physical destruction of all media must also be maintained for 60 days without explicitly calling out the requirement for a closed-circuit camera system. B(9) provides the flexibility of R2 Facilities certified to Appendix B for physical sanitization to use a mobile phone, tablet, or other device to record video while data-bearing media are actively being shredded, crushed, or destroyed potentially onsite at a customers’ location or in a mobile shredding vehicle. Video file date stamps can provide evidence to auditors that 60 days of recordings are maintained. Meeting the security and data destruction video requirements in R2 will instill in customers confidence that you’re safeguarding their data.

EVENTS:
CHAMPIONING ELECTRONICS SUSTAINABILITY AROUND THE WORLD
| |
|
|
Each month, we let you know where we’re going and what conversations we’re having for two reasons. First, we hope you’ll catch up with us if you plan to be in the same places. But even more importantly, we want everyone to know how and where we are sharing our message, talking about electronics sustainability for a global circular economy and, in many cases, how R2 fits as a part of the puzzle. We see educating all the decision-makers to make better choices as a big part of the journey to electronics sustainability.
In August, SERI’s CEO, Corey Dehmey, recently participated in the U.S. State Department study in California. E-waste regulators from Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Panama, and Peru gathered to learn about WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and used/waste battery management for the recovery of critical materials. Corey had the opportunity to share information about the R2 Certification program and the way in which standards and regulations can work together to drive circular and sustainable outcomes.
