R2 NEWSLETTER: NOVEMBER 2024
Several members of SERI's international team pose together at the 2024 eSummit in October.
THE SERI INTERNATIONAL TEAM | SUPPORTING A GLOBAL STANDARD WITH A GLOBAL TEAM
To achieve electronics sustainability, businesses and individuals must have access to responsible reuse and recycling options, no matter where they live. For SERI, this means expanding the reach of R2 globally, and it’s why we continue to invest resources to increase awareness, drive demand, and support the adoption of the R2 Standard worldwide.
Whether it’s helping customers understand the value of choosing R2 Certified partners, educating regulators how to utilize R2 for circularity, or supporting facilities throughout the certification process, we believe that building our global organization with regional teams is a powerful way to support the transition to electronics sustainability and maximize our impact.
This month, we want to introduce you to more of the SERI global team that’s here for you, wherever in the world (and in the journey) you may be.

We want to let the R2 community know that Orion Registrar has rebranded as Amtivo in the United States and you will see new certificates over the next few months. As a reminder, if you see a new name you don’t recognize, or you are ever in doubt of a facility’s certification status, R2directory.org is the most reliable resource.
IMPACT MEASUREMENT PLAN UPDATE
|
As announced in previous R2 newsletters, SERI is working on our first Impact Report to provide valuable insights that demonstrate our collective impact and highlight our roles in creating a more sustainable future for electronics. In January 2025, R2 Certified facilities will be asked to contribute basic operating metrics from 2024, such as the volumes of electronics received, reused, and recycled. This information will help demonstrate R2’s impact and showcase our industry’s collective contribution to global sustainability efforts.
For more information, please visit our dedicated webpage, where we’ll continue to post updates throughout the project timeline.

R2 TIP: REMEMBER TO UPDATE DOCUMENTATION AND REGISTER ANY CHANGES PRIOR TO SHIPMENT
The Basel E-waste Amendments will add controls on international shipments of non-hazardous e-waste starting Jan. 1, 2025. As a result, R2 Facilities may need to evaluate their existing downstream recycling chain to determine if they are complying with applicable import/export laws. This might prompt R2 Facilities to change their downstream vendors, update their legal compliance plan, and their FM Management Plan, accordingly. For those registering their DSV chains with SERI under Appendix A(4)(b) in order to stop tracking at the first R2 Facility, these facilities need to register any changes to the downstream recycling chain with SERI before the first shipments to the new DSVs.

THE POWER OF THE R2 KNOWLEDGE BASE | The R2 Knowledge Base is filled with videos, implementation articles, podcasts, and more helpful resources, all built to support the R2 community through the R2 Certification process.
RECENTLY ADDED TO THE KNOWLEDGE BASE
PREVENTING PV MODULES FROM CONDUCTING ELECTRICITY: A Q&A explores the Appendix G requirement that R2 Facilities develop and maintain a documented process to protect PV modules from conducting electricity during transport, handling, storage, and processing.
REGISTRATION OF DSV FLOW WITH SERI: An accurate and up-to-date registration of the DSV chain with SERI allows the R2 Facility to stop tracking and verifying at the first R2v3 DSV. Auditors must request and review the email confirmation(s) from SERI. More importantly it is the auditors' responsibility to audit the accuracy of the DSV Flow registered with SERI.

CHAMPIONING ELECTRONICS SUSTAINABILITY AROUND THE WORLD
| |
|
|
Each month, we let you know where we’re going and what conversations we’re having for two reasons. First, we hope you’ll catch up with us if you plan to be in the same places. But even more importantly, we want everyone to know how and where we are sharing our message, talking about electronics sustainability for a global circular economy and, in many cases, how R2 fits as a part of the puzzle. We see educating all the decision-makers to make better choices as a big part of the journey to electronics sustainability.
