Ravalli County 4-H
September 2021 Newsletter
As this year ends with a very successful fair week, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to each and every 4-Her, parent, guardian, volunteer, and supporter! You are what makes this program so successful and one that continues to inspire new youth to join and gain the valuable life experiences 4-H has to offer. As you reflect on the past 4-H year, I hope you mostly think of the positive experiences and memories, but also note the experiences you learned from and how to do things differently in the upcoming year! Thank you again to everyone who gave their all this year in 4-H!

After Fair Livestock Species Meetings
Every year it is important to look at the systems and rules we have in place for our 4-H program. Each large animal project area has a subcommittee of the Livestock Committee. Those who can vote at the subcommittee meetings are teen project members and project leaders currently enrolled in the project. These subcommittees vote on proposed changes. Those changes that pass the subcommittee will then be voted on at the October Livestock Committee Meeting. The changes that are passed in Livestock Committee will then be voted on at the November 4-H Advisory Council meeting, Extension Office.

Small Bore Pistol and Rifle Season
The summer of 2021 flew by as we spent our Tuesday & Thursday evenings leading our 4-H students through their introduction to shooting small bore rifle & pistol. A total of 13 young people participated, the most we’ve had since the program started in 2018. By the end of the season our goals were met – safety had become a habit, they were comfortable with their guns, and their groupings improved tremendously! Our final night was especially memorable in that we combined the groups and had the students coach the parents, as well as having some fun shooting competitions with the shooting trees!

The students made great strides in moving through the various NRA/Winchester Qualifcation Program achievement levels. One of the highlights was presenting the highest NRA/Winchester Qualifications award, Distinguished Expert, to Kale Blatter! His determination, focus, and attention to the fundamentals of shooting over the last two summers is something to be proud of.

It was summer of learning new shooting skills, developing discipline, and gaining self-confidence. The time spent was most rewarding & well worth it.

Fall Ambassador Training
Friday October 22- Sunday October 24, 2021
Billings Hotel and Convention Center, Billings MT

Fall Training is the annual leadership development retreat for Montana 4-H Ambassadors and Teen Leaders. The event is planned, implemented, and evaluated by the State Ambassador Officer Team. Youth will leave the weekend prepared and excited to take the knowledge and skills they have gained and apply them in their counties. It is also a great place to have youth leaders exchange ideas and create a statewide network of resources. Fall Training takes place each year over MEA weekend, the third Thursday/Friday in October.
Registration cost is $175, including lodging (2 to a room) meals Saturday and Sunday Breakfast and program costs. Adult chaperones will have lodging options during registration.
Those participants interested in attending need to register using Zsuites. Please contact your MSU County Extension office for specific registration requirements and deadlines.
Youth participants must be 14 on or before October 1, 2021 and volunteer chaperones must be at least 21 and a certified volunteer.
