Throughout 2020 our RCPL CARES: Cultivating & Advancing Racial Equity Systemically team has been hard at work building racial equity in the Redwood City and North Fair Oaks communities. We have been doing so by examining our policies, training staff, presenting public programming, collaborating with communities of color, and more. What follows is a look back at the initiatives of RCPL CARES in the final months of 2020:
-
The RCPL CARES team drafted a work plan to advance our racial equity goals. Read it here
- Staff Development Day: In October, RCPL CARES developed and presented an all-staff training and conversation session centered around equity and anti-racism.
-
Human Library: In December, we held our first virtual Human Library event during United Against Hate Week. Readers and human books had rewarding one-on-one conversations that ultimately broadened their horizons and built connections across differences.
-
Holiday Celebrations Around You: in December, our Youth Services team presented holiday celebrations from around the globe. With virtual crafts and stories, we celebrated the nine winter holidays of diverse cultures from the Americas to the far east countries of Persia, China and Japan.
-
Reading lists: Our team has produced many reading lists meant to inform and educate on matters of equity. Find the lists here: Antiracism For children and families, For teens, For adults, How To Talk To Your Kids About Race, Black lives Matter Comics & Graphic novels, Building Tolerance
In 2021 RCPL CARES will be focused on a comprehensive review of Library policies to identify any elements that are inequitable, and to find opportunities for the Library's policies to be proactively anti-racist. Policies include the Library Behavior policy, Materials Selection policy, and Meeting Room policy, among others. We are planning for opportunities for community engagement regarding the plan during 2021, but if anyone wants to share their thoughts now they're welcome to email the Library Director, Derek Wolfgram, here.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
|
|
The Friends are back from their winter break! After hibernating, celebrating and probably too much food, we feel refreshed and ready for 2021! Let’s jump off into the new year with our 6th Book Donation Event on Saturday, January 16 from 10am-12pm behind the Downtown Library at 1044 Middlefield Rd.
We’re especially looking for almost new or gently used books, hardback fiction which isn’t older than 3 years and kid’s books.
To keep our volunteers and you as safe as possible, please bring your donations in a box or bag you can leave and we will ask you to load them on our carts. Also, wearing a mask is mandatory and please keep 6 feet apart.
