A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
I hope that you’ve had a chance to visit us for RCPL Limited Edition to browse our collections, pick up your holds or use a computer. Behind the scenes, we are planning for the next phases of Library service, including the reopening of the Redwood Shores Branch Library meeting rooms on August 16. Look for more information on that in the coming weeks and the ability to make reservations beginning August 2. While we don’t have specific dates to announce yet, we are also actively planning for the return of seating in libraries; reopening of spaces like the Teen Center, Project READ, and early childhood literacy installations; restarting indoor programs and events; and restoration of full service hours in the months ahead.

An area of focus for the Library over the past two years has been RCPL CARES - Cultivating and Advancing Racial Equity Systemically. Our team has crafted a Racial Equity Story/Case Statement and a work plan to advance racial equity goals. Due to COVID-19, we have not had much opportunity for robust engagement with affected communities to ensure that our current RCPL CARES work plan truly aligns with community needs, but we plan to do so in late 2021/early 2022. This community engagement effort will also help us identify a new set of library service priorities based on our community’s aspirations.

Based on our last series of community conversations a few years ago, equity has been one of the five community aspirations underlying our library service priorities since 2016, and equity was also added to the City Council’s strategic priorities in October 2020. Equity has always been a foundational principle of the Library’s work to some extent, but with the increased focus in recent years, we believe it should be added to our Library mission statement, last revised in 2017, to ensure that we remain focused on and accountable for this work. The new statement is as follows:

The Redwood City Public Library cultivates community
and advances equity by welcoming all people
to experience the shared joys of literacy and learning.

We are keeping equity in mind as we closely follow the City’s Redwood City Reimagined phased approach to in-person services, with our Storytime Outside the Library, Storytimes in the Park in July, and we’ve just begun to send our outreach librarians to community events such as the Kiwanis Farmer’s Market. Look for us at the 6th Annual Redwood City and North Fair Oaks Health Fair this Sunday and be sure to sign up for the Summer Learning Challenge! I look forward to seeing you at our Libraries and out and about in the community.

Your Library Director,
Derek Wolfgram
