November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
|
November is a busy cancer awareness month, recognizing pancreatic, lung, stomach and carcinoid cancers. Our focus this month is on lung cancer.
There are two main types of lung cancer: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Early detection and diagnosis is crucial in a patient’s outcome since most lung cancers do not even show symptoms until a later stage. The earlier the diagnosis of lung cancer, the more effective the prescribed treatment will be.
Treatment for lung cancer has improved over time, which in turn increases the survival rate for a patient. The treatment for the two main types of lung cancer may differ in their approach. Treatment options for NSCLC are based on stage at diagnosis, as well as the patient’s overall health and lung function. Certain traits of the cancer are also important in determining which type(s) of treatment are given for NSCLC. The options for treating SCLC are also based on the stage at dx, overall health and lung function. In treating both of these types, frequently more than one treatment regimen is given.
The American Cancer Society website contains information on the most common treatment options and approaches per stage at diagnosis for both NSCLC and SCLC.
Below are treatment combination reports that can easily be generated in CRStar on both these types of lung cancer as a comparison.

November Employee Spotlight - Kent Andrews
|
Our November employee spotlight shines on Kent Andrews, Software Engineer. Kent joined ERS in the spring of 1999. He earned an Associate Degree in Computer Programming from Cincinnati State where he continued to work in the school's IT department for nearly two years after graduation.
When asked what the favorite part of his job is, Kent stated, "As technology, methods, needs and standards change, we have to evolve our product and ourselves to adapt. And as we adapt, it almost always requires us to learn something new. Which is one of the best things about working for ERS."
Kent lives in one of the northeastern suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio. In his spare time, when he is not visiting his mother and brother, Kent enjoys reading, going for walks, and following professional hockey and baseball. Kent also enjoys learning about new and different technologies, architecture and watching a good movie.
