The student run Celebrate Culture Club at Joseph C. Wilson High School Commencement Academy has embarked on a service project to honor soldiers who died in World War I. A plaque at the base of a flagpole at the school was dedicated in 1919 to the graduates of then West High School who had fought for our country and died while serving. A flag that flew over the school at that time will be raised one last time on Wednesday, May 18, lowered, and then presented to a representative from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for proper retirement.
Junior ROTC students from Leadership Academy for Young Men will conduct exercises to play taps, raise, lower, and present the flag to a representative from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). The representative from the VFW will then follow proper protocol to have the flag officially retired.
Additionally, students from Wilson Commencement Academy have asked fellow classmates and staff to create poppies for a display. The poppies will serve as a special backdrop to the flag retirement ceremony. Red poppies will signify the loss of members of armed forces, white poppies will signify the loss of someone due to COVID, other illness, or violence, and blue poppies will signify support for the people of Ukraine.
