As part of the Rochester City School District’s Summer of Discovery, students in the District’s ROC City Players (grades 4 – 12) have been rehearsing since mid-July to participate in three performances of Disney’s Willy Wonka, Jr.
“This summer program is unique because we are reaching students who have not been able to participate in ROC City Players throughout the school year due to other commitments,” said Taylor Johnson, a ROC City Players Co-Founder. “It has been great for these talented students to have this opportunity.”
Students enrolled in this particular summer program come from schools all across the District. They have been participating in auditions for the upcoming shows since Monday, July 11. These fun-filled, 75-minute performances are based on the delicious adventures of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, which was brought to life in a 1971 film starring Gene Wilder.
ROC City Players was founded in 2017 by Dominic Pickard and Taylor Johnson. Pickard is the Director of Arts for the RCSD, and Johnson is the District’s Musical Director as well as a music teacher at John James Audubon School No. 33. Previous performances during past school years have included Beauty and the Beast, Once on This Island, Shrek, Frozen, High School Musical Jr., and Moana.
